Train Up Tuesday: My 3 Sons

I love being a mom, for so many reasons (although from recent posts you've learned what an exhausting job it can be!). One of the things I love about relationships that God allows us to experience (friendships, marriage, parenthood) is how it can cause us to wonder about God's relationship with us.

Recently, now that I have 3 boys with 3 personalities and various needs, I've been praying (quite earnestly) about making sure that God makes up the difference in the attention and time that I give to each child. I love them all so much, but sometimes I fear that one may lack in the attention he needs from momma.

My oldest child is in his second year of homeschool. That means he gets lots of attention from me (thought not always my completely undivided attention). He thrives on learning and doing new things.

My youngest child is a newly walking toddler, into everything, exploring everything, and still needing mommy for lots of things (especially attention). I love the "newness" of this relationship and discovering his personality.

Then, there is my precious middle son, and if you have a "middle" you know what I mean. He sometimes will observe classtime lessons and do the activities to the best of his ability, but usually he wants to get into something other than what is on task. :) He often gets "into trouble", "on my nerves" (asking for things that I can't do at that moment), or like at this VERY moment he is under my arm shaking my hand as I type making an otherwise easy task quite difficult. But....I love him for it. And I know he probably lacks in getting the most attention. So, I have to be purposeful in taking him with me on errands (alone), letting him help me in the kitchen (though it takes at least twice as long), and just holding his hand while walking through the house to let him know I know he is there, and I am there for him.

I wonder if God lets us see this as parents to maybe let us catch a glimpse of Him. We all are in different parts of our walk with Him. Are we deep in His Word, learning about Him, walking with Him and thriving in that each day? Are we new in Christ and relishing in all that the newness brings? Or maybe we feel like we are missing out on something (whether or not it is of our on doing). Yes, sometimes the nearness we feel to Christ is a result of correction, but sometimes it can be His presence as we seemingly struggle in finding where we "fit" with Him and His family.

Regardless of where we are "in THE family", it is so reassuring to know that God wants to draw near to us and will use any means necessary to bring us to that point. Yes, He indeed draws near to those who draw near to Him.

My sweet middle son is indeed striving to draw near to mom, and though I may not be able to give him the same attention as his brothers, I desire to be near him, too. And, though through different methods, I do just that.

If you feel yourself as a mom, struggling to keep balance with your babies and their needs for your attention, pray to the Father to help you make up the difference and that HE would make up the difference in their lives as well.

And take time to thank Christ for wherever you are in your relationship with Him. Seek to draw near to Him and thank Him for how He expresses His love towards you, even though it may not look just like the way He is expressing it to someone else. "Oh, how He loves us!"

Train Up Tuesday: Lest I Forget That I Only Have Them a Short Time

Ever have one of those weeks, days, or months where parenting is just plain tough?! That's been me the last few weeks. Yeah, I read the Good Book and other good books, and implement what I know to be true and timeless standards, but sometimes, it's just tough. Lately, it's been one of those "I-love-you-but-I-don't-really-like-you-at-this-moment" kind of seasons.

In times like these (come on, even those of us who see this as "no greater joy" still have times like this, right?...or is it just me?...are those crickets I hear chirping?), I've found great encouragement in a few things:

1. Admit it - to your spouse, to friends, hey, even on (dare I say?) Facebook. I did all of those things recently. My husband is amazing and knows how to refresh my spirit. And all it took on FB was a status update: "I could use prayers today. Having a tough day as a mom/disciplinarian." That alone lit up my wall with encouraging comments and prayers of friends that I know are lifted me in prayer. It also welcomed inbox messages from people who otherwise wouldn't have ministered to me (thinking I otherwise have it "together" all the time).

2. Pray - which is "admitting it" to God, but it is also a way to soften your heart towards your children, because you do want to mold them into God's image and into turning their hearts towards him.

3. Read your Bible. The ultimate in true godly counsel!

4. Good music. My 15 m.o. son figured out how to find music on my iPhone long before I did! The other night, he pulled up one of my favorites (okay, he's not really a genius, he didn't know it was a favorite, but I do think God was working through my baby's fat little fingers at that moment). Jars of Clay "Boys (Lesson One)" - it speaks of a parent handing down lessons of great worth...and the reminder that all this (growing up, parenting) goes by all too quickly...

Sara Groves also has a couple of songs that I'm trying to keep in my heart and mind: "Prayers for This Child" and "Song for My Sons" (the first being a "prayer" and the second being similar to the Jars' song for its "advice").

Stay at Home Saturday: Praying more in 2012

Some of you may still be cleaning up from Christmas and wondering what on earth to do with all of those Christmas Cards. I first shared this idea last January, but wanted to repost for those of you that may have missed it.

In years past; I made a Christmas scrapbook where I placed all the photo greeting cards received, however, in all honesty, that scrapbook is on a shelf and the photographs have not received the attention they deserve for the thought that went in to the family photographed, printing and mailing of each. It is no small time commitment or cost to send them out and we so appreciate each one we are honored to receive. As I have two young boys I know it is no easy feat to get a family ready for a portrait.

Here are a few ways to pray for those friends and family that sent you a card:

1. Place all the photograph/cards in a basket and each night at dinner have someone in the home select a card. This is a wonderful way to share with your children or spouse the history of the relationship, trials the family may be facing currently or in the past prior to uplifting them in prayer. Then place that specific card in another basket as a symbol that you have prayed for that family/individual. When the basket is empty you can place them all in again and start over if you wish.

2. Number each photograph/card on the back with a number. This would work well with small children that are learning their numbers and dates. For the day of the month you pray for that special family/individual with the number that correlates with the calendar month (months of the year that don't have 31 days families with those numbers will be prayed for the last day of the month). When you have numbered your cards through 31 just start numbering over again (you will have several families to pray for each night depending on the volume of cards received).

3. This same idea can be used by last name. Place all last name A's together etc. through Z and place them in order and pray for those last names one initial per evening.

4. Lastly, if the above ideas are too overwhelming for you I would encourage you to place the cards in a large manila envelope and put aside. When you have a few minutes of prayer time pull out one of the cards and lift that individual/family up in prayer.

Free-for-all Friday: What does God have to do with Polar Express?

I know Christmas is over but with all of this cold weather, you may still be watching this movie...

I'll never forget the first time I saw The Polar Express. I was about five months pregnant with my first child and I went to the theater with my sister and a friend. I remember crying during the movie because it was just so good and sweet and, since it was Thanksgiving, I left truly in the Christmas spirit. Ever since that November day in 2004, we have made watching this movie a family tradition. We break it out early each season and it is watched over and over again until January. Both of my older children were obsessed with it when they were young toddlers, and they still will sit on the couch mesmerized by it. Even though it's watched an extreme amount of times each Christmas, it seems to never get old. So, the other week we were watching it for probably the 200th time and all of a sudden it dawned on me that this movie has a major spiritual tone. I always knew it did with the "believing" concept, but it was like a huge light bulb went off in my head--the characters of the hobo, the conductor and Santa represent the trinity! Stay with me now...

First, let's start with this guy:

I have always wondered what or who he was. Why was he in the story? And why does he look like the conductor and Santa...it's like they're all the same person, even though they aren't. If you notice, he's always asking the little boy (who isn't sure if he believes in Santa) what he thinks of Santa Claus....does he believe in him. He's always popping up in the story when things get tense and he either helps or questions the little boy's thinking. I think this character represents The Holy Spirit. I figured this out when the little boy picks up the bell at the North Pole and looks at it. If you'll notice in the movie, you'll hear the hobo's voice say "NOW!" really quietly (I had never noticed it before) and THEN the little boy says, "okay, I believe....I believe!". It's like the hobo (HS) was convicting him and making him realize that he does believe.

I think this guy represents Jesus:

He is the one who brings the train full of people to Santa (God). You can't get to the North Pole without him. When Billy is hesitant to get off of the train once it reaches the North Pole, the conductor tells the little girl and little boy that you can't make someone come...they have to be willing. Hmmmmm. AND on the Polar Express song that the conductor sings, he says "you can ride for free, if you just say yes!". We all know that salvation is free for anyone who is willing to accept. He's also aware of the Hobo and refers to him while looking at the little boy with a knowing look in his eye.

So, obviously this guy represents God:

In the movie, Santa is revered by all. He knows the very instant when the little boy says "I believe" and he approaches him by saying, "What is that you said?"

Has anyone else thought of these metaphors before? Am I crazy that I never have? There are so many others....Billy is a poor little boy and some of the others on the train are privileged (salvation is for all people), the elves could represent angels, the North Pole represents Heaven. Your mind could go crazy thinking of all the metaphors. Anyway, I knew I always liked the movie and now I really do. My sister said that she read somewhere once that Tom Hanks (the man behind the movie) is a Christian. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but I hope that he is and that he put these metaphors into the movie purposely. Anyway, just some thoughts by me. Can anyone else think of any other metaphors?

Train Up Tuesday: The Conspiracy

If you are an ardent Advent lover, you've probably already heard of the Advent Conspiracy. It's for those of you who want more from Christmas...and by "more" I DON'T mean more gifts :) Check out this video for a brief overview:

When I was first introduced to AC a couple of years ago, it was instrumental in impacting my family's traditions. It has lead us to spend less on each other, make more gifts, get creative, and give more towards missions (local and internationally) and towards those around us in need of help or encouragement. The last few years have been exceptionally wonderful for us. I can't remember much that I've received in way of packaged gifts, but what we've received as a family in contentment, joy, quality and quantity time cannot be matched.

I hope that the recent weeks' posts have encouraged your gift making and giving, but more than that, I hope this week's post drives you to do more by doing less in some areas.

Train Up Tuesday: BELIEVE

So, last week, I directed you to the website Impress Your Kids for a great tutorial (on ahomemade gift idea) and to be inspired for Advent ideas. Well, guess what? Although I'm a subscriber, I sometimes get behind on fresh reads from my favorite sites. In doing that, I didn't realize that Amanda (Impress Your Kids) has a downloadable Advent book "Truth inthe Tinsel" complete with daily lessons and ornaments (that can be made with household items)! Best part....it's only $4.99 and you can download it IMMEDIATELY! "Yeah, but it's already December 6!" No sweat! She has alternate schedules so that you don't have to feel pressured to complete all 24 days. So, go there NOW (well...when you finish reading this blog, first) ;-)

Speaking of "Truth in the Tinsel", two of the lessons from the last few days have really got me thinking. One day, we learned about Gabriel's message to Zechari

ah regarding the joyous news that he and his wife would have a baby, even in their old age (Luke 1:5 -25). Zechariah doubted, and as a result, the angel shut his mouth so that he would not be able to speak until John (the baby) was born.

The next day, we learned about Gabriel's message to Mary, that not ONLY would she conceive though she had not "known" a man, but that her son would be THE SON of the Most High (Luke 1:26-38)! And her words? "Be it unto me, according to your word." She may have been "troubled" by the saying, but she had no disbelief.

Now, when I contrast those 2 messages, it seems more likely that Mary should have doubted, for her news not only seemed impossible, but also a little "lofty", whereas Zechariah's news was more on the "highly improbable" list. But how many times do we do this...doubt something that is "highly improbable" at best (or worst?)?

I wonder how many times that our doubt has resulted in us missing opportunities to proclaim knowledge of God's hand at work while it was happening or about God's peace while we were waiting for the promise. Maybe God is still going to "do" as He promised, but because of our doubt, we miss being able to give Him glory in the meantime.

I so want to be like Mary - when faced with joyous (though maybe intimidating or overwhelming) news - that I sing and praise even before there is evidence of the arrival of God's promise. I don't want to have "nothing to say" or be unable to speak of what I see God doing because I doubt!

Just BELIEVE!

Homemade Gift #5

Are you enjoying the homemade gifts from the last month? I know they are nothing fancy. I don't know how to sew, I don't knit, so I have limitations with time and knowledge as to what I can do. But I do enjoy the little bit that I DO get to make!

This week's idea is very easy. I like scrapbooks (have NEVER made one)...but I LOVE photo books that you can put together electronically on various sites. This year for my Want, Need, Wear, Read gifts, each of my 3 boys are getting a photo book filled with photos from a previous year of their life (can you say, "someone neglected keeping up with baby books"?).

I've used a few different photo sharing sites, but so far, my favorite is Shutterfly, both for quality, affordability (especially with discounts this time of year), and ease of putting it together (which, with 3 boys ranks pretty high on my list of importance). I especially love their custom path.

Because of a recent shipping special, I also ordered some extra Christmas cards from them (I'd rather spend my money on a product to qualify for free shipping than to pay for shipping!) They have some lovely Christmas card designs as well as lots of other designs in their collection (maybe for a New Year's card if it's too late for you to do a holiday card?).

Train Up Tuesday: What's in THE Name?

I LOVE Isaiah 9:6 and this print is a beauty! (Be sure to head over to jonesdesigncompany.com where you can download this print in this color and a blue/gray version)

This verse is often quoted at Christmastime, and appropriately so. It's no wonder that it is used in Advent readings, as well. Speaking of which, this week marks the first week of Advent! If you are looking for appropriate Advent readings, BillyGraham.org has a GREAT series.

Are you also looking for ways to teach your children about the names of God? There are plenty of great resources out there, I'm sure, but I adore the site: Impress Your Kids. She has SO many ideas that are great for every day, but she has helped shaped our family in great ways with activities, lessons, and even the homemade gift below!

Homemade Gift (#3)
Last year, I saw a great tutorial on Impress Your Kids on how to cut out your own letters, apply them to a canvas, paint over it, and VOILA! make a beautiful personalized painting.

Amanda at Impress Your Kids used a favorite quote from the Jesus Storybook Bible (which you know I LOVE). I used it for one of my "Want, Need, Wear, Read" gifts (the "Read" one) by combining the names of my 3 boys into a painting along with the verse that inspired their names. It turned out beautifully (the picture isn't great...had to snap it at night with low light):

It really was a simple project (and inexpensive). I used a canvas from Goodwill that I painted over. I was able to complete this project over the course of a couple days' worth of naptimes (with 3 boys, that's the only way I could do it!) It's well worth your time and makes a great impact! I hope to make more in the future for family birthdays and such.

You could even use the idea for the Isaiah 9:6 verse! How lovely that would be. :)

Forrest Gump meets Pinterest

I hope each of you had a blessed Thanksgiving day reflecting on the Lord's blessings and love. Normally, I would be out conquering the Black Friday mayhem and rig-a-ma-row but those crowds and sales aren't quite calling my name like they usually do.

In fact, at this moment, I am blessed with a child-free, QUIET, peaceful calm house and this is what was calling me.

I am taking fulllll advantage of this time to just be by myself--the fire, a cup named "a joe" and my "Good Book". :) :) :)

While enjoying this much needed time, I was kinda hit in the head with a Forrest Gump "My Momma always said..." meets Pinterest moment.

I mentioned here that MY Mama has always placed a BIG importance on displaying scripture around the house. One reason is because it's a great reminder. Another reason is because it is repetitive and helps hide it in your heart (and memory).

She really is right because when I read a scripture she's had displayed in her home for my whole live-long life (Here's where the Pinterest part comes into play. )....the visual (mental pin) instantly pops into my head of that scripture on that exact plaque, picture, wall what have you. In fact, those scripture-displaying items from her home are some of the things that I hold most dear to my heart.

This little item (pin) is one example. It dates back to my parents hippy days and It's been displayed since before I was born. I recall finding great entertainment playing with it before I could even read. It is small but I LOVE it...and how appropriate the verse is for the season!

...and now, as I sit in my parent's living room, these are the glimpses of God's Word one will catch (pin/repin) as their eyes sweep the room in an effort to gaze at the fire. It's Pinterest in person. :)

Train Up Tuesday: Getting "Stuff" Out of the Way for Thanksgiving

There are a couple of pictures on Pinterest (I know, roll eyes now) that made me stop....longer than to just "pin" them, but to really think about them. Maybe you've seen them or pinned them (no judgment here):

Please don't think I'm "over spiritual", but as lovely as these sentiments are....I think that we (at least in western culture) have let thanking God for all our "stuff" get in the way of thanking God for all HE is. Certainly, I think we can "take a break" from asking God for anything, but I think we can do more than thank Him for all we "have", unless of course those "haves" are things like, salvation, His protection, His provision for our real needs, etc. (as opposed to our really awesome house or that really good steak we had the other week).

And what if we DID only wake up with those things we "thanked God for yesterday"? I don't think I'm alone in thinking that I'd still be content, because I do continually thank Him for my family and my relationship of Him....those "things" that matter most.

Please make no mistake. I'm not that hard-nosed. Of course I think that hearing a child thank God for the Hershey kisses he got to have that day or for his favorite toy of the moment is precious and I understand how we can "thank God" for a caffeine boost that seemed to get us through the day. But, I think sometimes we overuse "thank you God", like we overuse "love" (i.e. "I LOVE those new shoes!"). It's almost like taking that phrase in vain. I think we fail to get beyond the "stuff" part of our gratitude and fail to see the One who provides, protects, and so on.

So, while thanking God for the year of bounty, I hope I remember to take time to thank God for those attributes that acknowledge Him for who He is and how I've seen Him in my family's life over the last year. I hope I don't just let my list of favorite stuff get in the way of true gratitude.

Train Up Tuesday: TIME OUT for Thanksgiving

The last couple of weeks, we've been considering "Advent" and "homemade gifts". But this week, I HAVE to take a TIME OUT! I definitely want to get the "Advent" message out there (because in years past, I haven't given enough time in advance to actually allow readers to prepare before Advent). However, I do not like what the over-commercialization (and even well-meaning preparation) of Christmas has done to other important November holidays (can you say "Veterans Day" and "Thanksgiving"?).

So, this week, take some time and re-visit some previous Roof posts on "Thanksgiving". You'll find some great old and new traditions to consider and some fun ideas to celebrate THIS season.

Don't get so caught in the hustle and bustle of buying or making gifts that you fail to be thankful for here and now!

Train Up Tuesday: Random Acts of Kindness and Homemade Gift #2

Did you know that November 7th is the beginning of "Random Acts of Kindness" week? You may remember a link to some great RAoK ideas a few weeks ago. Well, I searched on "Pinterest" for some more ideas (unrelated to blogging about it here) and was pleasantly surprised with THIS RAoK Advent idea (Random Acts of Christmas Kindness)! What a GREAT way to "redeem the time" and make the focus of Advent what it was truly intended to be!

I also like the timing of the "RAoK Week" because it leads up to "Veterans Day." Wouldn't it be lovely to take some time THIS week to do some "random acts" for a Veteran you know? Or perhaps you don't personally know a Veteran. Maybe you could keep your eyes peeled when you are in public for some men and women wearing flag pins or hats. You could secretly pay for their meal or coffee and perhaps leave a note of encouragement and thanks to them. Maybe you could do something for the family of a Veteran (those spouses and children have made much sacrifice, as well).

Although (I think) Veterans should often receive "special treatment", I doubt it is as commonplace as it once was. Your children may ask why you are doing it; perhaps the receiver asks as well. Make sure that your children and the Veterans know that it is more than mere appreciation, but that you are a "servant of Christ" and it is your delight to serve or encourage others so that they may see Christ.

Homemade Gift (2)
This next gift is so much fun! It's a dress up trunk! Almost every little boy or girl I know would love such a gift. Last year, I collected clothes and costumes for my niece at half price sales at thrift stores and by rummaging through my own unused collection of purses, bags, accessories and jewelry. With the Halloween season behind us, you may be able to score some great steals on costumes. Your imagination is the only limitation! Find either an old suitcase or a rubber storage container. I LOVED seeing my niece's expressions as she discovered all the treasures inside.

Another play on this idea is to make "when I grow up" kits. Maybe you collect things for an original doctor's kit (bandages, cute cold compresses), housewife's cleaning box (empty squirt bottles, aprons, cute rags), or even something imaginative like a "knight's chest" or a "space explorer's backpack". This year, I'm working on a Caboodle's box (does ANYONE remember those?!) filled with real curling and flat irons (with electrical cords removed), hair clips, hair embellishments (maybe I'll find some feathers), and fake make up. I found great inspiration for fake make up that doesn't involve the mess of the play make up. Be sure to check it out on Chasing Cheerios!

Train Up Tuesday: Words of Affirmation and Homemade Gifts

Okay, let's just get it out there. It's NOVEMBER!!! I know it's still too early for most to think about Christmas, and I certainly DON'T want to rush my favorite holiday (Thanksgiving), but if you've been following the Roof for a while, you know that the ADVENT season is one of my favorite times of year. I always wait until almost the end of November to mention it, so I'm trying to get a jump on it this year. I love the "anticipation" of it all - not just the countdown to Christmas, but instilling the love of "anticipation" for our Lord's return.

So, if you are filled with this "anticipation", I'd like to offer some ideas over the next few weeks on what you can do as you await Christ's return AND an idea of how you can prepare for the coming holiday season.

If you recognize the phrase "Words of Affirmation", you may know the book "The Five Love Languages". (And if you don't know the book, it is WELL worth your read!) In case it doesn't ring a bell, it is the love language that uses the spoken (or written) word to encourage someone you love. Oddly enough, it is often people we think who don't need these words (extroverts, performer types, those managing or directing others) who often need them the most!

Recently, God has "blessed" my family with a few opportunities to use kind words (we started calling them "healing words" in light of our recent memory verse: Proverbs 12:18) in public situations dealing with people who work in some form of customer service. In a couple of different situations, women were struggling with either the boundaries of their position or their inexperience on their new job. In the one situation, we did not have the opportunity to "give" healing words, but in the car ride home, my oldest son asked if we could pray that the lady would have a better day (because it was certainly impacting those around her!). In the second situation, my boys heard me encourage the young lady that her day would get better, which led to another prayer for someone we didn't know.

I say this, not to brag on my "perfect" (*snort*) family, but to encourage you moms to take captive of those little opportunities to bring "healing words" to someone your family encounters THIS week! As a stay-at-home mom, I have to hunt and keep my eyes peeled for such encounters.

Homemade gift (#1)
Over the years, my family has experimented with different gift-givings to try to bring it all back into the right focus. We've done "Make, Bake, Sew, or Grow" (where the gifts you give must fit one of those categories thus making it somewhat homemade); with my kids we've given just 3 gifts (to represent the Magi) and last year we did 4 gifts for each (something you Want, you Need, to Wear, and to Read). We'll probably stick pretty close to the latter again this year. However, I always try to make at least one of the gifts I give (can you tell what MY "love language" is?).

This year, I'll try to share with you some easy-peasy gift ideas that you, too, can make (trust me, it'll be pretty easy....with 3 boys running around, I can't really get into too many crazy hobbies and craftiness)!

One gift that has been fun for me is decorating wooden peg dolls. I found loads of inspiration on Etsy.com and one year I made little families for my nieces and one set for our family (and if I can find a pic, I'll post one later).

This year, I hope to make peg superheros for at least one of my boys who is really into Spiderman lately. I found these cuties on Pinterest (but you can by these through an Etsy shop):

You can buy wooden pegs at Hobby Lobby (wait until unfinished wood goes on sale or take a coupon). If you want more shapes and sizes (as I did), you can buy them from Etsy as well. You can even use the old wooden clothespins (without the springs). Have fun with it, add "hair" or fabric if you are so inclined. OR, if you have a crafty one on your gift list, give them the supplies they need (paints, brushes, glue, pegs) so they can design their OWN peggies. I've even seen some drill little holes, attach a small hook, and make a cute necklace out of their peg people!

Peg people - it's a relatively quick, easy, and inexpensive crafty gift!

Free-for-all Friday: Girl's Night Out!!!

Hi Ladies! I'm sooooo sorry I've been MIA (missing in action) lately but let's just say this lil thing called life has been kicking my bootie. Thankfully, I had a long awaited, FUN, therapeutic Girl's Night Out last night that did me goooood and I'm excited to tell ya'll about it!

At the beginning of the summer, Musing Foodie, Carolina Clipper and I put our heads together and were mulling around having a blog GNO incorporating each of our blog's readers. We knew what we wanted to do and were excited about it but we were having a hard time getting the pricing and logistics juuuuust right. Just as we were getting ready to throw in the towel, I shared our vision with my sweet friend and amazing licensed artist, Caroline Simas.
The Lord laid it on Caroline's heart to say, "Hannah! IIIIIIII will create a custom art piece incorporating scripture and IIIII will come share and teach your group how to create that piece." It was an amazing answer to prayer and above or beyond anything our minds could've conjured up!
So, I shared it with the women's ministry at our wonderful church and they not only were thrilled about the idea but wanted our Bible Study, mom's Heart to Heart to host it for alllllll the Women of Central.

Well, last night was THE night and it was so fun to me. There was something so refreshing about getting out of the "mom bubble" and be able to spend an evening with women of all ages and all walks of life. I was able to sit at a table with a beautiful, spunky lady in her 70s that reminded me sooooo much of my grandmother and I loved every minute. The only thing better would have been if my grandmother could have been there, too!

I was so busy that I didn't get many pictures but Musing Foodie catered a FABULOUS baked potato bar and smores bar and Caroline created a mixed media piece incorporating a choice of three scriptures.

Train Up Tuesday: A Servant's Heart

There is a "theme" that keeps repeating itself around me...in my reading, talks and discussions, and even suggested blogs I receive from friends. It's that of "servanthood".

There is SO much I could write regarding how God is shaping our family in this way. It would take several posts (will this be a part 1 of several? We'll see?). Let's step our toes into the water first. :)

I clearly remember being taught to have a "servant's heart" as a kid in school. I can still remember the tune and most of the words to a song we were all taught (I wish there was a version of kids singing it, because that's how I "hear" it, but this should give you a good idea):

I want to be a servant for Christ and others. I want my boys to become those "servant leaders" I admire. In today's culture, though, opportunities for that are rare and not enticing. I mean, even in the church world, we want to proclaim our efforts and receive accolades (or feel that we have to give them to those who do serve....many who want to do so quietly and NOT receive earthly recognition). How in the world do we train children in a world that loves platforms and fame? I'm finding that it isn't easy, but we CAN be intentional in our efforts. Why a servant's heart? As an opportunity to share the gospel of The ultimate Servant-Leader...not just to be a "pushover or a loser" (thanks, Tim Hawkins):

Train Up Tuesday: More Than a Cursory Glance

More than likely, if you follow this blog, you are probably pretty choosy about what your children are watching or what songs they are hearing. We are "those parents" in a lot of ways. The kind who are probably a little too strict on things regarding what we let our kids watch and hear.

Or at least, we try to be. But every once in a while, the guard isn't up as high as we like. Not intentionally but quite innocently. It might be letting the boys look over my shoulder while I search "Pinterest" for cool superhero cakes, or letting them watch the DVD that had not been previewed by Mom & Dad (because we remembered seeing it on television and not having any issues)....and THEN it happens. An image totally inappropriate for myself, much less my kids, sneaks into your image search (a search which is NOT supposed to contain "that" type of content). Or the DVD you didn't preview is not exactly the same as what you remember on TV and words creep through your set that are not in line with your standards.

Just another reminder that you HAVE to be proactive in guarding the hearts, mind, eyes, and ears of your children. Preview your searches before sharing exciting things with your kids. When they are old enough, DON'T let them search alone...even if they are in the same room with you (kids and computers are QUICK!). If they do search alone, do some research on all the filters available. Watch those DVDs and movies before they get the chance. Even if you use a great site, like Plugged In, to be your "preview", be sure that the movies meet your own personal guidelines before sharing them with young children. Individual children can often have their own personal limits about what they can handle. For example, I remember when we went to see "Up" as a family. Great movie. Adorable. But, at the time, my then 3 1/2 year old son was terrified of dogs (a frequent "nightmare" topic for him). It took a while to get past it. Another sidenote: just because it's animated, it doesn't mean it's suitable! Don't let what appears "innocent" get overlooked!

Thrifty Thursday: Dion's Daily Deals

A couple of months ago, I had the privilege of meeting a local NBC affiliate reporter, Dion Lim, at Ben and Jerry's. She did a cute little segment on our kiddos about beating the heat w/ ice cream. She was so sweet and kind with the kids!

Since then, Dion has become part of our local women's media collaboration group so I've gotten to exchange with her on more of a personal level than watching the news every evening.

You must know that Dion isn't just any news woman! She's a cent savy woman that loves a good deal and helping others know how to be thrifty. In fact, she has her own segment entitled Dion's Daily Deals.

This week, Dion let us in on some exciting news that her segment is going prime time tomorrow(Friday)! Train Up Tuesday: Sweeter Than Honey

"Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bone."
Proverbs 16:24

This is the verse my family is learning this week (thanks to "My Father's World" curriculum). My oldest son remembers this principal (that of kind words being like jewels) from some studies last year. We came across an old fairytale at the library called "Toads and Diamonds" (read it here). It left quite an image in my son's mind. He often will say to me, "Momma, your words are so nice. It's like jewels are falling out of your mouth!" (That may only make sense to you if you read the previously mentioned fairytale.) :)

This week, as we are memorizing this verse and studying ways to apply it, we used this illustration: place one spoonful of honey and one spoonful of garbage in front of your child. Ask which one he/she would rather have. Even if your kid doesn't like honey, I doubt they would ever consider the garbage! I really didn't even want to serve the garbage - dig for it, put it in a bowl and place it on our table. We should take that same consideration with the words we decide to serve to others.

Upon further meditation on this verse, we talked about where we could get inspiration for these "pleasant words". We realized that the best words can be found in God's Word. We can pray for others, pray for what to say (or not say), say "I love you" or "God loves you". We also talked about the "healing" benefits of honey (hey, I was curious why the Bible says the words are like honeycomb). You should look that up, you might be surprised at all that honey can do for you! Our words can be a healing salve, an antiseptic, a soother for someone's soul (all things that honey can be for the body).

Your family might have a "hive" full of honey that a hurting world, neighbor, or family needs access to. Or maybe your own little family needs those "pleasant words" put into practice inside the home. Either way, take a little time today to get some honey from The Word so that you can have kind words to share with others.

Train Up Tuesday: Ten

No doubt you've read many a post related to September 11 already. The encouraging thing is that it shows we don't have short memories about everything (I've heard it said that Americans tend to have short memories regarding many things, especially politically), though this is probably a memory that we all wish we didn't have to have.

Unfortunately, as Christians, we too can have short memories about some great things. We may "forget" because the pain of the past still hurts far more than what we feel it's worth recalling. Or we often tend to "forget" the good things and only dwell on the negative. I'm challenging you today to make an effort to make all those things a marker of sorts in your life, for the benefit of pointing others to Christ.

September 2001 has some powerful markers for me. Of course, I am forever impacted by September 11th, but there are a couple of days leading up to that that have profoundly influenced my life as well. The first is the salvation of a gal who was (and still is) my hairstylist. God had given me and other Christians opportunities to be a witness to her while getting our haircuts and color jobs. She was certainly seeking, that was obvious to us. But we were all anxiously anticipating the day she would see her need for Christ and make Him her choice. And then, it happened, and oddly enough, it happened about 2 weeks BEFORE September 11th.

I remember talking to her shortly after that date. She said she knew if the Spirit had not led her to Christ before then, September 11th may have made her heart more hardened and she would not have had His peace on that day. Ten years later....she is a most amazing woman of God and witness for Christ, still doing hair and encouraging those she comes into contact with. On a personal note, she is one of my best friends, and even better....she is my sister-in-law. I will ALWAYS remember September 2001.

The second story is related to the day BEFORE September 11th. That was a very hard day for me. It was the realization that things weren't as perfect in my marriage as I thought. It wasn't for the sake of something hugely immoral, but it was the realization of the track of debt that we were on, mostly due to medical bills related to our first year of marriage (when my husband was diagnosed with cancer). It was sobering and a revelation for us that we had to dramatically change our course of action.

Debt isn't its only problem in itself. The managing of it, or the poor attempts can bring up issues of trust and doubt in marriage in general, even if they are unsubstantiated. I recall that night quite vividly. How in this world would we make it through it?! But God is so faithful. It was the beginning of a "healing" per se and the birth of something so beautiful in my marriage....total trust and openness and finding true contentment with what we did have. Ten years later...we have such joy. Yes, we have very little debt, which is great in itself, but more than that, we do have that contentment. Our house maybe be small and our family is ever growing, but our children are learning to feed their hearts and souls with more than material possessions or even the desires for them. I will NEVER FORGET September 2011.

Coincidentally, for a class my husband is taking he recently had to write out a one page salvation testimony and a one page recovery testimony (the latter being something "fresher" that God has brought you through since salvation). I encourage you to go back and look at some things that have happened in your life and the lives of those close to you. Recall them and actually talk about them, especially with your children. As huge as September 11th was for all of us, if we don't continue to remember it, eventually there will be a generation for which it has no meaning. Similarly, if we don't take time to revisit salvation of friends and relatives as well as "recovery testimonies" our children will fail to see the spiritual struggles that we've faced and that God has been faithful to bring us through.

My hopes for the future of "Patriot Day" in our family is to take time to recall September 11th AND the days leading up to it.

Wednesday in the Word: There's a sermon in that...

I don't know about you, but it seems to me that, as women, we can be quite territorial. This is something the Lord has really convicted me of lately.

My realllly close friends and family can tell you that I might be one of the world's largest skeptics--a strength when certain discernment is needed but also a great weakness when it turns into a mechanism to protect myself unnecessarily. Truthfully, sometimes it's just easier to stay in your comfort zone of "like minded" people--but, truthfully, that's just not always where the Lord wants us.

I have a prime example in a furry little lady I know named Sercy. Sercy was my sister's 11th birthday present eight years ago (bear with me even if you aren't a dog person).

Around four years later, a new man entered the scene, this cutie patootie named Boo.

Well, five years after Sercy and Boo became siblings, Sercy still did not really understand the concept or definition of sibling love. She has not liked the competition, the split attention, the company, you name it...she just hasn't been too fond, and quite frankly, it has brought out the worst in her. It's caused her to be snippy, ornary (sp?) and just a grumpy lady!

My parents and sister have been traveling a lot lately so we've been keeping these doggies at our house which means Sercy has been moved out of "her" territory, her comfort zone. She's not the one "in charge." These two dogs have finally been forced onto equal ground.

Low and behold, guess what has happened? Sercy has started LOVING Boo of all things. It's amazing. After all these years, she all of a sudden loves the brother that was given to her and is lost if he is not in her presence. The two of them now look out for one another and are sweet to one another.

How many of us are like that?

If you ask me, this is a lesson for us women....that once we get over our "territory," we can love our "brother" (or sister) in the way we were created. Furthermore, our "territory" is enhanced and even expands!

I was reminded of this last night when I attended a coffee at my church where I only knew a handful of people. Most of the "security blankets" in my direct comfort zone were not in attendance. Shamefully, if you had told me that not many of my close church friends were going to be there beforehand, I may not have gone. However, it was an AMAZING night. I invited a couple of special friends outside of church that actually came and I was able to connect in a new way with some beautiful sisters in Christ. Most importantly, I witnessed an indescribable energy and presence of the Holy Spirit that I never would have witnessed if I had remained in my comfort zone. I love it when the Lord lifts our eyes!

Both of these examples remind me of the Prayer of Jabez from the Bible.

“Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” 1 Chronicles 4:10

Sooooo, I was perusing Pinterest and couldn't help but notice this reoccuring trend among "pins"--a little pattern called "Chevron." Call me behind the times b/c I would recognize this pattern but never knew the official "name" of it. Apparently, it's really "caught on" in the world of accesories, clothing and home decor.

I was telling a friend about this trend because she just moved into a new house and I was envisioning a splash of Chevron...perhaps via a lil grey chevron pillow...as a nice touch in her sitting room.

Not long after, her decorator/sister called so we inquired. She enlightened us that chevron would be considered fashion forward vs. classic traditional.

Know how once you hear about something new, it pops up like 10 million trillion times and you wonder how you never ran across it before?

Well, a few days later, good ole Stacey (remember her?...theme song...in China) told me she was going to study at the Charlie Brown Cafe in her Chinese town. I made her promise to take a picture so she did. I wish you could see this cute lil cafe but I'm having trouble uploading the picture. Hark! The pattern on Charlie Brown's shirt was stenciled on the outside of the streetside glass windows around the whole outside perameter of the cafe.

It's alllllllllll coming full circle. Could it be that ole Chuck was the original King of Chevron? Who knew that the fashion forward need look no further than Peanuts (and maybe Pinterest) for the answers to all of life's important matters. ;)

Train Up Tuesday: Undeserved Trophies

Recently, my boys found out that I had a few trophies from my childhood. I grew up in an era where most trophies still were "earned". Though a few girls I grew up with had numerous awards for beauty pageants, my trophies were for things like memorizing the books of the Bible, winning a spelling bee, character awards, art, and even one for a "marathon" in elementary school. Yet, as "special" as those moments were at the time, all these years my awards have been collecting dust or have been packed away for quite a long time.

When I brought them out (because the boys begged me to), we dusted them. I explained to the boys that they have no real value....gold painted metal, and they wouldn't survive a fire. It was a great opportunity to share a lesson on laying up true treasures in heaven. The boys were quite captivated, though no matter what I taught them, their eyes were still fixed on those trophies.

Later, my husband and I were chatting before bedtime. He told me that we had three trophies...our three sons. I've been chewing on that for awhile. These "trophies" we have been given aren't even "deserved" or "earned"....though we've certainly worked really hard since they were "given" to us. Yet, at the same time, they aren't like those awards given at the end of an athletic season to members who just showed up to meet the requirements of being on the team. Our sons (trophies) weren't carelessly given and half-heartedly received. These have been entrusted to us. They are to be put on display for God's glory. And the way we raise them is what will bring Christ glory...not for our own sakes (though it does feel good for people to notice the job you seem to be doing as a parent) but so that the world will take notice of the Christ that is.

How are you treating your "trophies"? Are they "on display" to shine for Christ in the way you are leading them? Remember, they are more valuable than any earthly treasure. Value them as such!

Love is not ...

Love is not envious (1 Corinthians 13:4). Wikipedia defines envy as an emotion that "occurs when a person lacks another's(perceived) superior quality, achievement, or possession and either desires it or wishes that the other lacked it." Envy is the opposite of generous. It is a feeling of ill will to those who are equal to us. Envy leads to hate or a covetous desire for something.

If we place envy in the context of marriage it looks very ugly, childish and selfish. The loveless marriage is often because we chose to be at war with our spouse and at war with anything good in his life. It can be as simple as being envious that my husband "gets" to ride to and from work in his truck everyday with no kids and no distractions. On the other hand the envy can root deeply and stem from the feeling of inadequecy a stay at home mom feels as she gives up career and paycheck to "stay" home and take care of the children and the domestic duties. Envy can lead to bitterness and contempt towards our husbands. There is no good fruit that comes from a bitter woman who focuses in on what she doesn't have.

Love is not envious. Love IS generous. Love looks the good things in our husbands lives and motivates us to celebrate those things! Here are some applications for today:

1) Pray and ask God to reveal areas you may be envious of your husband.
2) Admit to yourself, confess to God and to your husband where you have resented something good in his life.
3) Celebrate your husband and his good fortune today! Do something to show your appreciation for him and remind him (and yourself) of the character traits you were drawn to him in the beginning days of your relationship.

Remember, we are all in the process of change and growth. Truth sets us free as does honesty with ourselves and vulnerability in our marriages!

Savory Smackerel: Daily Bread

Hope ya'll have enjoyed some of the ways to implement your garden crop and farmer's stand produce. I must say I might be in mourning that the summahtime produce is nearing the end. :( Right now, butternut squash just isn't exciting me as much as the abundance of tomatoes we've enjoyed. If you would like to give one last fun tomato recipe a whirl, be sure to check out Musing Foodie's fried green tomato endeavor and tutorial.

Now, we're moving on to a year round food item--bread. Who can ever get enough of it? Talk about comfort at it's finest. Unfortunately for my hips, anytime I am in a "changing" season in my life (ie the week of my wedding, the weeks after my brother's death, 1st trimester morning sickness)...you know, anything that tends to get the stomach rumbling....bread is one of the only thing I find that settles the ole tum tum.

For awhile, I've heard some of my friends talk alllll about their bread machines. I'll admit I didn't sink my teeth right away because I didn't want to succumb to the pressure of having "another thing to keep up with" or another thing on the list "to do."

I happened to be browsing Craigslist about 3 weeks ago and found a good bread machine for $25. I figured I'd give it a whirl and see if I'd really use it. That way, we wouldn't be at much of a loss if I didn't. I had to see for myself but, boy, have I been missing out! If I knew then what I know now, I totally would've registered for one for my wedding, requested grains and flour in place of baked ziti after my brother's death, and lived on bread alone for my 1st trimesters (who needs Zofran?)!

Report: I haven't bought any bread items in 3 weeks (even including burger/dog buns and pizza dough) so we've more than made up for that $25 and I've found you don't eat nearly as much bread when it is full of good, hearty ingredients opposed to preservatives and air. Not to mention, it makes your house smell A-Mazing! It is sooooo worth it.

Hence, our new Savory Smackerel series~ Daily Bread! We are going to explore some fabulous ways to get the most outta those bread machines. First up: Onion Bagels.

I heart onion bagels. Never in a million years did I imagine I would ever bake my own bagels but it was so easy. This was the second thing I did in my bread machine and they are Di-Vine! Move over, Bruegger's, Panera and Einstein. HPS has your number! Try them and let me know what you think.

Onion Bagels (adapted from http://www.grouprecipes.com/5615/onion-bagels.html)
Ingredients

1 cup of water, warm
4 tablespoons of butter, melted and cooled
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups of white whole wheat bread flour
1 1/2 teaspoons yeast

To finish:

1 oz. sugar
yolk of 1 egg
1 tablespoon water
1/4 cup of onions, sauteed (I probably used more like 1/2 cup)

Instructions:

Put the ingredients in the order listed above into your bread machine baking pan.
Set the program to dough.
When the cycle has finished, transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and divide into 8 equal sized pieces.
Shape each piece into a sausage shape with tapered ends measuring about 9 inches in length.
Working with a piece at a time, join the ends together to make a circle.
Then pinch them gently to seal them.
Place the circles on a lightly oiled cookie sheet, leaving enough room between them for each to rise.
Cover the circles with a clean dish towel and leave them to rise for about 20 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 400 .
Finely chop enough onion to make a 1/4 cup. Saute in a bit of butter.
Put the onions aside.
Bring a large pan of water to boil.
Add the sugar and stir the water until the sugar is dissolved.
Place 2 bagels in the boiling water and let them cook for about 30 seconds on each side.
Continue until all bagels have been in the water for a total of 1 minute.
Turn them with a slotted spoon.
Lift each bagel out of the water, gently shaking it as you do so to remove as much water as possible.
Return the bagels to the baking tray.
Beat the egg yolk with the water, then brush this mixture over each of the bagels.
Sprinkle the sauted onions over the bagels.
Bake the bagels in the oven at 400 degrees for 15 minutes or until they are golden.
Transfer the bagels to a wire rack and leave them to cool.

Well, thanks to Hannah's post last Monday, I'm finally...pinteresting (is that the verb form of "pinterest"?) I don't know if I should thank her that much, because I could easily become addicted to it. Nonetheless, I have found some inspiring quote prints and fun ideas for my kiddos! It has DEFINITELY helped me organize my bookmarks as I am much more visually inclined. :) And, for me, it has been nice to find topics with a "visual" description rather than opting to "google" something. Savory Smackerel: Salsa

So, I promised last week that I would share a fab salsa recipe with you in the event you don't know what to do with your summer's tomato bounty. Welllll, my hubs made a kidder outta me. He is so tickled with our salsa production that he want's it to be a novelty to those with whom we share it...yes, a secret (gasp). Since I'm called to be submissive, I'm afraid I have to oblige. BUT I'm not going to totally leave you hangin'. :)

I WILL tell you we combined two recipes plus added our own tasty ammendments to our batch of salsa. I WILL tell you that this is an excellent base recipe (wink, wink). From there, have fun with it! I don't think you can mess it up and you'll be more than happy with the end result. Be sure to jot down exactly what you do. Then, you'll have your very own secret recipe with which you can tease us! :)

Who knew we needed a theme song?

I had scheduled this time to sit down and tell you about a few deals to help make this Thursday Thrifty. However, my course has changed and today is going to be Theme Song Thursday instead. Sometimes things just need to be switched up and today is one of those days.

Background: Well, I have a very dear, loooong time friend name Stacey who happens to be serving in China. Traditionally, RWAV's audience has been moms but Stacey isn't a mom. She is single with no children. However, she shares with me on occasion how the Lord has laid you ladies on her heart. She thinks of you. She prays for you, and believe me, you can be blessed by this because my girl is a prayer WARRIOR!!!!

Anywho- Stacey has taken it upon her sweet self to find us a theme song...and it just happens to have our theme verse in it's chorus! By golly, I love that girl.

You're going to love it. If you're dry today OR you are meandering through the mundane routine housework OR you need a new tune to spice up your exercise routine...just hit play and worship...by yourself, with your kids...just do it. No matter what you feel in your spirit, just scream these words out to the Lord. Feel free to even bust out some dance moves as you start to loosen up and take off a load. Marvelous Monday: Pinterest!

Pinterest....heard of it? Heard of it and wonder what in the world it is? Either way, trust me. You want it.

Even if you aren't a Facebooker, you will LOVE Pinterest. There is zero pressure. It weeds out the mundane details of what your neighbor's best friend ate for dinner, where your high school BFF's sister checked in for her bi-weekly spa treatment or whose genius child went poopie on the potty at the age of 18 months (ok...I'm being a little dramatic and I do love FB-just not some of it's trivialness).

Basically, Pinterest is a bucket list of fabulous ideas at you fingertips for which you would otherwise have to read 5 years worths of subscriptions to Martha Stewart Living, Real Simple and Good Housekeeping to generate the same amount of creative energy.

Think back to your adolescence-did you have a bulletin board in your bedroom and live to decorate your school locker? Remember how you would cut out magazine clippings of buzz words you liked, celebrities you stalked, and the latest trends you "had" to have?

Save the bulletin board clutter, ladies. Pinterest is your technologically savvy, 2000's version of all that magazine clipping.

How it works
The jist is you sign up for Pinterest, install a "pin" on your computer toolbar and anytime you see a visual of something you like online, you "pin it" for future reference.

You have "boards" which are basically like folders which you can label in whatever categories you like and you can organize your "pins" amongst your "boards."

It is like Facebook in that you have "friends" and you can follow your friends "boards" but there really isn't pressure. It's just a fun way to share ideas.

You can "repin" other pins onto your boards and "like" or comment to "pins" as well.

Soooo, in summary, when you glance at your Pinterest homescreen, it is like looking at the best of the best of internet ideas and blogs all on one screen-which, in essence, saves you a ton of time--at least, if you "need" ideas. Otherwise, it could quite possibly err on the addictive, time sucking side (just a preliminary caution).

Savory Smackerel: Back to the Tomato

Just a fraction of this week's garden fresh tomato supply!

So, we've been doing a mini series on how our gardens (and summertime produce stands) taste. Sorry we've been kinda quiet the past couple of days but that garden is keeping this girl BUSY! I know we've already covered the tomato in this series but we've had tomatoes and figs coming out of our ears and a sister can only eat so many mater sammiches. What in the world do you do with all of the Lord's garden provision? 2 words. Marinara and Salsa. We now have tons. It takes a lil' time but BOY is it worth it!

I'll admit that, in the past, I steered away from these endeavors b/c the thought of peeling and seeding tomatoes kinda intimidated me. However, I found this site that brought it down to my level and was very helpful. Trust me that you don't want to skip this step or your sauces will err on the watery side.

Marinara
For me, homemade marinara is comfort at it's finest because my sweet Mama Eleanor has been making homemade marinara for years and one of my all time favorite meals when we pay a visit to the beach (well, anytime really) is spaghetti topped with her homemade marinara and baked shrimp or scallops from the local Bill's Seafood. It just doesn't get much more comforting or tasty.

I FINALLY attempted a batch of my own. 1st time was a little watery (I didn't de-seed). Second time was pretty much on the money if I don't say so myself. My grandmother has her recipe in her head...you know...a pinch of this, a lil of that. Apparently, it is outta the American Cancer Society from years ago but I can't find it. The closest match to her instructions that I've found online was this one (give or take) and it is freshly fabulous. Prego doesn't light a candle to it. Oh and don't worry, if you don't have fresh tomatoes, the instructions include a substitution option of using canned tomatoes and it is just as good plus a little thicker in consistency.

Oh...and the figs? I gave CCs recipe a whirl plus my man made a mean batch of fig jam. Party in your mouth!

As for the salsa, be gathering you some tomatoes and I'll share that one with you next week. You will LOVE it.

Train Up Tuesday: Document Their Childhood

Most likely, you have a digital camera. If you're like me, you love that you have 20 frames of the same shot (and are hesitant to delete ANY of them, because it's like deleting a child!!!). And probably, you've only actually printed a couple dozen of the 1.5 billion photos you have on your computer.

Or, maybe you are a scrapbooker. I love the thought in those, but I would NEVER have nor make time to actually make them myself...buying the right papers, stickers, punches, ribbons...too many decisions for this 'ole gal! However, I do think it's worth your while to have those photos out of the computer and in a book so your kiddos can actually enjoy looking through their (or your) past. I love going through my childhood photos with my boys, figuring out which of them they think I resemble as a baby, sharing memories of my growing up years. I also love going through their pictures with them as they say, "HEY! I remember that!" or "I was SO cute then!".

In the last few years, I've opted to make photobooks. The first one I made was through Apple to document our first family trip with our firstborn. It was nice, but pricey and I never came across discounts (I'm all about a "special"!). I've also used Walgreens (recently) to make a book for our middle's second year. That one was pretty simple, but I wasn't very impressed with the final product (too many small black print smears throughout the book). Shutterfly, however is the one I have been most impressed with. I had made a small photobook with them in the past for my husband on Father's Day. He keeps it in his office to "show and tell" ;-)

The latest book I made was to capture our first year of homeschool. I figured, we don't have a "year book", but this would be better! Instead of just a couple of photos of my kids, they get a WHOLE book to themselves! Shutterfly offers a "simple path" and a "custom path". I think you would be impressed with either. We opted to customize our book and it was a real winner! The custom path was really quite simple...even though it was custom. I like being able to make one of my own photos the background for displaying other pics. I was thoroughly impressed with the finished product.

Love is Kind

The greatest commandment Jesus himself taught us is to Love the Lord with all our heart, soul and mind and to love others as we love ourselves. Love is a multifacitated noun that is broken down for us in 1 Corinthians 13. Over the next few weeks I will continue to go through God's top ten on love.

Last week (actually 2 weeks ago) we saw the attitude of love is patient and now we see that with that attitude there is another attitude with an action. The second attribute of love we find in 1 Corinthians 13 is "kind". The action is to be kind. What does that mean? To be kind is to act with good deeds towards others. To be kind is to expressing goodwill towards someone else. It is to think about what gives someone else pleasure. In order to act kind towards someone we must have an attitude of benevolence. The actions shown in love are intended for benefiting others rather than profiting for ourselves.

The opposite of kind is cruel. This brings to mind the fictional character Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians. Cruella's name is a play on the words cruel and devil. Most of us have watched as she plays the villian in this Disney animated film. Cruella's goal is to steal puppies and then slaughter and skin them. Of course through a series of events, the puppies outsmart the villian and good overcomes evil. Cruella was only interested in her own financial gain without regard to those she was stealing from and the puppies she was disposing of. I share this to paint a picture of what the opposite of kind can look like.

In thinking ahead ask your self the following questions:
1) Who am I to love today?
2) Are my actions benevolent towards this person?
3) What relationships am I not being kind?

Father,
We love and adore you. You are the great "I am". Your ways are perfect and your love is without error. Thank you for always being kind. We know that kindness sometimes is letting us grow through our mistakes and always being present with your hand outstretch for us to reach back up to you. Reveal in my heart today where I am not being kind, change me Lord.

Savory Smackerels: How does your garden taste? Part 4

We've covered the cucumber, the peach and the tomato. But what's the novelty of "livin' off the land?"

I just got this email and thought it was a little too amazing not to share. Now, how can people not believe in the God of creation? He amazes me.

Oh, and one question. Since we have a rather abundant fig tree in our yard, would that have anything to do with the fact that we have twins when they don't run in either of our families? I shoulda known. It was the fig tree. :) Anybody need some figs? :) Speaking of figs, check out CC's latest fig endeavor (and perhaps you should stay tuned for her upcoming announcement. She did mention something about eating 16). :)

God's Amazing Pharmacy
It's been said that God first separated the salt water from the fresh, made dry land, planted a garden, made animals and fish... All before making a human. He made and provided what we'd need before we were born. These are best & more powerful when eaten raw. We're such slow learners...

God left us a great clue as to what foods help what part of our body!

A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye... And YES, science now shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart has four chambers and is red. All of the research showstomatoes are loaded with lycopine and are indeed pure heart and blood food.

Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds on the nut are just like the neo-cortex. We now know walnuts help develop more than three (3) dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.

Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.

Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and many more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. Free-for-all Friday: What's so great about blogging anyway?

A former coworker recently shared a blogpost with me that I knew I had to share with you. If you blog, I think you'll shout a resounding, "Amen!" when you read this. If you're not yet a blogger, it may help you understand all the blogging hooplah and maybe even make you want to start a blog of your own.

Background: Mom in Mendon is a mother and grandmother with grown children including daughters that are probably the age of many of us. She does an excellent job articulating the reason why we thought starting a community such as Roof with a View would be significant for moms. I say, "way to blog, Mom in Mendon!" Us moms following in your footsteps always appreciate the wisdom and insight of our foremothers. You are needed in the blogosphere and on the web!

Rescued

Blogs are genius. Without question they've done more for Today's Woman than psychologists, counselors, and women's magazines who sought to come to the aid of all those mid-century Donna Reid Moms--mothers like mine. Like me.

In the 1950's and 60's, my mother prepared her four daughters for The Role of house-wifery and motherhood: "The most mundane, yet most meaningful work." She taught us to cook, sew, iron and economize. But she noted, "Happy mothers seem to have something extra going: a hobby, a creative outlet--something besides the Bendix washer on the service porch and a clothes line in the back yard. Something to ease the pressure of keeping up appearances, so all-important in that era. She told me about her friend. Bernice showed her a little pencil sketch she had done. "It wasn't very good, really," Mother explained, but Bernice said, 'I just need to have something else--an outlet.' " Along with all she tried to teach, Mother gave us permission to have an outlet.

There was nothing I wanted more than motherhood. Happily it arrived. But it was a LOT. Consequently, I kept my mother's counsel. With five young children in Riverside, California, I painted watercolors, I learned cake decorating, I tried writing. And mother was right. It helped. But even then, it wasn't enough. "What lack I yet?" I wondered.

Dad wasn't unaware. He praised the BLT's. "This was a lot of work. You had to toast the bread, slice the tomatoes, etc." He willingly sent me off to painting class while he held down the fort. In addition, of course, there were friends and neighbors, girls to call on the phone.

But despite my best efforts, it was a wistful me who wrote:

Where are all the fans?! Why couldn't someone be there to applaud, or at least nod in admiration...as I deftly, maternally fit a diaper? Or why not a chorus of ooh's and ah's as I place the pot of Spring Garden on the table, with murmured comments around about my ability to balance budget, nutrition and time in one clever meal? I would be modest....[in the face of praise]. An audience is all I require for the maintenance of....patience, wisdom and creativity. In a musical voice I can say to the child bouncing off the couch, "Furniture is not for jumping." The child is bored? "Why, here, Sweetheart. Mother has made this cardboard box into a robot." Exclamations of awe and surprise from the fans. But [the Mom, staying at home in] obscurity has no fans.... If the clean clothes are mounded high on the folding table and the floor goes a few weeks unscrubbed, who will know? If my voice demands harshly, "Get this robe picked up!" no one can condemn.

In fairness to my younger self, I wrote on and explained my conviction that good mothers shouldn't depend on shallow praise for recognition. I ended with a reiteration of my reliance on faith and my certain belief that Eternal Fans watched from beyond the Veil. I still hold fast to those convictions, but it was, nevertheless, a lonely time.

Not so for my grown daughters today. The new Millenium arrived, bringing with it the Web Log. Wow. Precisely meeting their need, blogs provide women with the Audience, with the Fans, with the Recognition. Mothers, wives, single women have been lifted out of obscurity. They don't need a big readership. Mainly, they are no longer alone. That's not to mention the cyber friendships, the fresh ideas, the learning, and the just plain fun they get in online interaction. The internet has filled the void.

I know it's not the answer to everything. We women will continue with our moments of wistfulness. But what a blessing! My daughters are better off. And I'm glad for it.

Wednesday in the Word: There's a sermon in that...#3

A couple of weeks ago, I explained how if my husband had a nickel for everytime I see something and say, "There's a sermon in that!" He would have lots of extra spending money! Shall I share my latest visual?
We recently had a little staycation at a nearby lake. One evening, my hubs was fishing and out of the blue, saw a fish making a ruckus on top of the water. Upon closer look, he realized a snake was escorting the fighting fish to the bank of the lake for suppahtime.
We watched the whole scene for a loooong time...the snake getting the fish right where he wanted him so he could devour him, the fish fighting, the snake getting the fish's head in his mouth, the fish fighting, the snake fighting to keep the fish in his mouth, the fish fighting some more.

It was actually quite creepily amazing as you can see in this video.

After this went on for what seemed forever, the snake caught a glimpse of my husband. Just like that, after all of that fighting and work, that nasty snake released the fish and cowardly reatreated.

What about the fish? Well, his fight was not in vain. He happened to still be alive and swam away to freedom!

I'm sure you know where I'm going with this but my mind couldn't help but make the parallels with what Satan tries to do to us and how we are called to keep fighting. The whole snake/fish scene flashed through my mind again as I was reading this entry from the Daily Light.

I am with thee to save thee.

Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered? But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee. And all flesh shall know that I the LORD am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob. — Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my rightousness.

Keep fighting, sisters. Eventually, the enemy WILL retreat. You have all of the strength, protection and help needed in the Lord!

Train Up Tuesday: Where is That "Harvest of Righteousness and Peace"?!

You may know that my husband & I read through "Shepherding a Child's Heart," by Tedd Tripp sometime ago. It was a wonderful book because it's main resource is God's Word and His way of training up a child. It really has provide us with encouragement for shepherding our boys. BUT, let me tell you, sometimes I just wanna throw in the towel! (Sound familiar?)

Even with being consistent and biblical, sometimes, it just seems like you are making no headway in this thing. I know I don't feel alone. I recently was talking to a dear friend who is going through the same struggles, and doubting her "technique" (which seemed biblical, too). I'll share with you what God spoke to me (both through my wonderful husband and through His Word).

1. Don't forget Hebrews 12:11: (ESV) "For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it." It seems painful to the kid, sure. But it can seem painful for us as parents, too, I think, especially when it seems to not be getting through. But, if we are patient, just as it takes time for fruit to mature, we will see the "harvest" in due time. It WILL be worth it!

2. Don't forget Hebrews 12:11. "Huh? Didn't she JUST say that?" You don't have to scroll back up, I did say it again. ;-) Don't forget that this verse is God's Word! Not only is it His promise, which can be reassuring, but it is His PLAN. The enemy can cause us to doubt God's Word by working against us...like causing us to focus on not seeing the results as soon as we'd like. It can be easy to lose heart and give up on being consistent to the way that God says to raise, correct, discipline, and love our children and opt for the "modern ways", the ways the "psychologists" (Christian or not), society, pop-culture, or even our well meaning church friends suggest that are more relevant today and seem to be "working". But when that happens we are really saying that we don't value His Word as being relevant to us today! If we choose for an easier, more convenient way out to simply modify behavior, we neglect God's plan for us and our children. If we can't trust His Way as being THE way, then, we in effect teach our children that there are some things where our own experience can trump the Word of God! Be careful of the message that you can send your children by doing that.

So, remember to value God's Word and His way for your family. And remember that His path WILL lead to that "harvest" that we are looking for in our children. Don't lose hope! (I KNOW it's easy to!)

Marvelous Monday: This mother wears combat boots!

Are you a little weary today, tired of fighting and just want to throw in the towel? If so, here is some timely encouragment to gird up those loins and pull yourself up by the bootstraps from one of our fav readers and guest writers, Melanie (aka Mella Bella). She has previously shared a fitness post here on the the topic of running but today we are delighted that she wanted to share some of what the Lord is doing in her heart.

For the past few months I've felt like God has me on the "fast track" of refinement. Over and again, opportunities arise in which I see two possible paths. One path is laced with grace. I can extend grace and seek unity and peace not only in my actions which are visible, but in my attitude which I could easily camouflage from onlookers.

The other path is paved with "the right to." The right to defend myself, the right to take offense, the right to quit the game, pick up my ball and go home.

Can I just admit that there are moments in my life in which I find it very hard to be a grown up woman? I'm talking about a grown up woman of God. The kind of woman who speaks the truth in love. The kind of woman whose spiritual branches artfully display the Fruit of the Spirit. The kind of woman who is not jealous, sarcastic or snarky. Oh it's easy when life is easy but when someone steps on your toes? Ouch.

But thank the Lord for THE LORD! His presence in the person of the Holy Spirit reveals snapshots of who I yearn to be, of who I CAN be in Him! And I am not willing to be any less. And He's not willing to let me.

But, I'll tell you, it does not come easy for me. I want to be right. I want to defend myself. I want to shout, "You're not playing fair!" and "You just don't understand!" I want to scrunch up my face, turn on my heel and announce, "I quit!"

God has done too much for me to do that to Him and to His body! I must choose to discipline my flesh, like Paul, who wrote, "But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified" (1 Cor 9:27).

So while I may sometimes hesitate before the path of "the right to," and even take a step in that direction, I'm grateful for the Light of the Word revealing the potholes and quicksand down that path.

Paul teaches us that we are running and competing for a prize and we must exercise self-control if we are going to obtain the imperishable crown. He goes on to say that he fights his own flesh, and not as a shadow boxer but as one who disciplines his self-defeating, fleshly desires.

So I'll keep running and I'll keep fighting and if someone steps on my toes, it'll be okay and I'll choose not to take offense because starting now, this mother wears combat boots!

Hi ladies!

There was sooooo much I wanted to share with you this week and BOTH of my computers went on the blink-wouldn't even power up. D-E-A-D. Big bummer but the situation has been addressed and we're up and running even better than before. I still have so much to share with you but some of it I'll save for next week. Train Up Tuesday: Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy! Some Thrifty Fun for Boys!

Okay, so not just for boys ;-) (I would have been all about these ideas during my tom-boy years....oh wait, I'm STILL a tom-boy!).

I know you've probably seen posts about the free Lowe's Build & Grow Clinics for kids, but you REALLY should take your kiddos to these! They are totally free (we've been to 3 and no money so far)! My two big boys have so far made a windmill putt-putt toy, a 4th of July waving flag stand, and a tow-truck (reminds them of "Mater"). The next class is scheduled for this Saturday (July 23rd, 10am in our area).

I think they are making binoculars, which sounds pretty interesting. When you sign up your kiddo for the first time, get them there early so they can get a free apron and goggles. They also receive a certificate and a badge (for the apron) each time they complete a project. What fun! They do actually sell the Build & Grow kits in the store, which is still good for doing things together, but it's hard to pass up on FREE. So, sign up for a class soon!

The boys are having some great Daddy time, and Daddy is having some great boy time! I'm hoping to coax the boys into using some of their handmade items as gifts for their cousins for birthdays or Christmas. I'm sure we'll be running out of room to put 2 of each of these items.

This next idea I'm so excited to share with you. What kid doesn't love a good fort...rainy day or not?! A great gal-pal of mine thought of me (don't you love when someone "thinks of you" and actually gets it right?!) when she saw this post by Emily at Salt Water Kids on a fort building kit. Basically, it is everything you need to build a sheet fort bundled nicely for gift-giving. Wouldn't that be a most awesome gift to give or receive?! Be sure to check the sidebar on the sight for more fort ideas and some other cool homemade gift-giving ideas. I'm becoming her follower ASAP!

Marvelous Monday: Smashariffic!

Every time I've driven down a certain road in our town, a sign announcing some new burger place has caught my eye. I'll admit my mind was thinking, "just another burger place." Well, this past Saturday, the fam was in that same area to see the new Pooh movie and had our heart set on grabbing a bite to eat at a tex-mex restaurant. As we were making the trek for some burritos, the burger place caught our attention and we decided to change our course to patronize the new, local business...just so we could say we gave it a whirl. I can't say my expectations were all that high.

BOY! OH BOY! Am I glad we went with our instinct! "That" burger place which happens to be called SmashBurger is one gigantic partay in your mouth! We LOVED it. The customer service was excellent. The menu was unique for a burger place and included all the items that usually catch my eye on a menu (you know the healthy things...all sorts of burger concoctions, an assortment of fry choices, fried pickles, milkshakes, lettuce wedges-I do LOVE a good lettuce wedge) and the prices were very reasonable. On my next visit, I'm anxious to try the freshly made black bean burger which you can order with any of the other burger concoctions. Oh, and if you ain't feeling beef, the have an assortment of chicken and salad options as well.

I'm here to tell you that all the other burger places in town better up their ante because Smashburger is going to take on this nation by a storm. I'm thinking they really are going to meet up to their mission to "quickly become every city's place for a burger."

Love is Patient

It has been a long while since I sat down to share what the Lord has been teaching me here at RWAV. I am glad to be back with the Roof With a View audience and hope to bring encouragement in your marriage and life journey today!

There are many great things that God has given us but there is one that sums it all up... LOVE. The greatest commandment is love God and loves others as you love yourself - Matthew 22:36-40. Simple.

I would like to start with the first characteristic we find in 1 Corinthians 13:4 "Love is patient." Patient is the "attitude" of love. It is not in a hurry. It is ready when called on. It is calm.

Apply this today. First in your marriage. Second with your children. Third to every other person who falls into the category of "your neighbor" (hint: that is anyone in your vicinity!). Here are a few questions to ask yourself in the context of each of these relationships:

1) In my attitude toward _______ am I in a hurry or do I slow down and take time to listen?

2) In my attitude toward _______ am I ready when called on or are they "interrupting" my plans?

3) In my attitude toward _______ am I calm or am I anxious?

Don't beat yourself up if you are impatient to those you love. Take a moment and ask the Lord to help "prick" you when you do not have an attitude of love and patience towards God and towards others. We must depend on Him daily and know that we will be at His feet often accepting the forgiveness He has freely given us! God is the great example of love and patience. He is outside out time and He is not in a hurry with anything or anyone!

Wednesday in the Word: There's a sermon in that...

A couple of weeks ago, I explained how if my husband had a nickel for everytime I see something and say, "There's a sermon in that!" he would have bookoos of money to support his favorite hobby. Some of these illustrations don't even need words and a picture does more justice. Here is one of my latest visuals, but first, I do need to give a little background.

My sweet one year old baby girl has started a new trend in the crib world. Several times now, I have gone into her room and she has managed to retrieve the "soilage" from her diaper and has been tickled pink to experiment with it as fingerpaint. Perhaps it's to entertain her twin brother who is her biggest fan and loves to egg her on from across the room. The most amazing part is how proud she is and the anticipation on her face that I too will be proud of her. Note the sheet, the crib, the shirt, the smile.

Yes, it's disgusting but, of course, it's hard to be mad at this face. I love this girl and wanted to save her as fast as I could from that nastiness. As an attitude adjustment and I were butting heads during the clean up and sanitizing, I had to stop myself.

How many futile attempts have I made to "please" Lord? (Lots.)
How many messes have I made? (Lots.)
How many times has he loved me anyway and rescued me from those messes? (Lots.)

Once again, THANK YOU, Jesus!

I love that He knows my heart, He loves me, He rescues me and that He gently reminds and quiets me with his love...over and over again. Just a few more reasons that I'm thankful for Jesus. :)

Train Up Tuesday: Clean Up, Clean Up! and Check out This Giveaway!

I promise, I'll get to the giveaway soon! FIRST, I have to share a "funny" with you. :) A few weeks ago, in an effort to train my 2 "big" boys (5 & 3) to help with cleaning, during nap time I wrote words and symbols on post-it notes of chores for them to do after nap. Each boy had their own color post-it note. I used words to help the 5 year old learn his reading. I used symbols to help the 3 year old figure out what to do. I took pictures of the notes for what I hoped would be a great idea for Roof readers (yeah, I know, I'm rolling my eyes, too ;-).

Then, the magical moment came. My boys awoke from nap, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and looked around the living room at the post-its covering walls, tables, windows. It was like CHRISTMAS!!!! I tried to explain what was going on as they looked around the room (note to self: with boys, at least, always explain what is going on before showing ANY pictures....that's why they grow up looking at instruction pictures and not reading directions as adult males). My oldest "got it". He was delighted to spray windows with cleaner and take a rag to wipe it down. He moved pretty well through the room looking for more notes and jobs (and he still asks for me to do this again)....My middle son who I just have to say never fails to unintentionally make me laugh rose to the occasion (of making me laugh, that is). He raced quickly around the room to grab all of HIS post-its...neverminding what they were instructing him to do (I think maybe he wiped down one table leg). I loved it, though. He felt he had really mastered something (I mean he HAD actually cleaned up all those notes!!!). I just smiled, and patted him on the back, and shook my head. Oh well, he'll get the lesson on that another day. Meanwhile, he's been busy playing "trashman" through the house, so I'll take it!

Okay, thanks for bearing with me on my story. That just cracked me up! Now for the "giveaway" part. Stay at Home Saturday: Savory Smackerel~The Tomato

Mary, Mary how does your garden taste? is our latest Savory Smackerel series where we are sharing some substantial ways to put your garden and local produce stand purchases to some serious use. So far, we've covered the cucumber and the peach. Today, is a fabulous recipe where you can implement the tomato!

For those of you who have tomatoes coming out of your ears and are sick of putting them in salads, on a sandwich or slicing them to eat with a little dash of salt, here is a good recipe for you! I LOVE tomatoes, but I am the only one in my family of 5 who enjoys them, so I don't get to make this recipe too often. Trust me when I say it's good....it's a Paula Deen, so the origin of the recipe speaks for itself:)

Tomato Pie

4 Tomatoes, peeled and sliced

8 to 10 fresh basil leaves, chopped

1/3 Cup chopped green onion

One 9-inch prebaked deep-dish pie shell (the key is to PREBAKE IT!!!)

Salt and pepper to taste

2 Cups grated mozzarella and cheddar cheese combined

1 Cup mayonnaise---not a big fan of this, but it's good in this recipe!

*Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Layer tomato slices, basil and onion in prebaked pie shell. Add salt and pepper to taste. Mix together grated cheese and mayonnaise and spread on top of tomatoes. Bake for 30 minutes or until lightly browned.

On the day God made fruits and vegetables, I'm so glad He decided to include peaches in the mix. They are my favorite fruit and since we're in prime peach season, delicious recipes are flying around kitchens of The Roof. We had to share a few of our favorites...perhaps you need to make a jaunt to your local farmers market or roadside stand and get in on the action!

The first recipe comes from The Musing Foodie, whose husband is a die hard peach cobbler fan. She made this for his birthday recently and it was gone in two days. This particular cobbler recipe (as not all are created equal) has a chewy top crust and when topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, promises to make you swoon. Jump on over to her site if a swooning cobbler is what you're after! She teaches you how to blanch the peaches and use the natural sweetness of the peaches to avoid excess sugar. Two thumbs up for CC's Peach Cobbler!

We now mosey on over to the delicious website What's for Din Din by our friend Donna! Many amazing cooks have contributed to this arsenal of culinary delight and the Deep Dish Peach Pie is not one you'll want to miss! Jackie Kennedy's personal chef made this...with a cream cheese top crust! It's cobbler style as well, so you don't have to be intimidated by a two crust (from scratch) option. You can do this ladies!

When all else fails, sliced peaches over ice cream are fail proof and spectacular as well. When it comes to peaches, it's a win no matter how you fix them.

Thrifty Thursday: Kids Raising Money to Help Kids ... with Cupcakes!

As a mom, I am always looking for projects that can involve children and help others. It is imperative to me that my kids grow up to understand the importance of doing for others. And hands-on projects in which they can truly participate (especially at such a young age) are sometimes hard to find, let alone put into action.

That's why I was so excited to learn about a project called The Cupcake Kids. It's an outreach through which children hold cupcake sales--reminiscent of front-yard lemonade stands--and send the proceeds to an organization that helps orphans in Africa.

That organization, Sixty Feet, is working to improve the horrific living conditions of imprisoned children in Uganda.

What's that? Imprisoned children?

Sadly, yes.

I first learned about Sixty Feet at an adoption retreat. While there, I watched a documentary about the work that Sixty Feet is doing in Uganda to help orphaned children who are being imprisoned in horrible conditions. The footage we saw was haunting, if anything. Children are locked up, often with no running water and with not even a mattress on which to sleep. And while the stench could not be adequately caught on camera, it was portrayed in the reaction of the visitors in the film. Since that time, I have been following the ministry's blog and have been encouraged by reading about the tangible things that are being done for these kids--and all in the Name of Jesus.

The good news is ... we can help--and our children can help, too!

That's where The Cupcake Kids comes in. The project, which just began last year, was actually started by children who wanted to help the children in Uganda. Here is more info from the website: "The Cupcake Kids was really the kids’ idea. They had been watching their parents becoming involved with a ministry in Uganda, Africa, called Sixty Feet, and they wanted to help out in their own way. 'Why don’t we sell cupcakes and lemonade on the corner one afternoon and give all the money to the kids in Africa?' they said one day. 'OK, why not?' So we gathered some friends, designed a sign or two, baked some adorable cupcakes and sat out on the street corner. Some folks showed up. And God showed up…big time!"

And that was just last year. This year, so far, The Cupcake Kids has raised more than $50,000! And 100 percent of profits raised at each sale goes directly to Sixty Feet! The first (inter)national Cupcake Kids sale took place just a few months ago--April 16, 2010--more than 125 sales were held in 35 states and four countries. The next (inter)national sale date is scheduled for mid-May of 2012. But here's the thing:

Anyone can hold a Cupcake Kids sale at any time!

How to host a Cupcake Kids sale:

1. Let The Cupcake Kids know when and where you are having a sale. You can register your sale at http://thecupcakekids.org/host-a-sale/.
2. Spread the word through Facebook, fliers, blogs, emails, and good old-fashioned word of mouth.
3. Make some cupcakes (or other goodies) and some lemonade (or other drinks).
4. Choose a safe location (there will be lots of kids running around!) that is well-traveled.
5. Set up a table, hang some signs, print some fliers about why you are having the sale and shout out at the top of your lungs, “Cupcakes! Lemonade!”
6. We have found in the past it’s better if you don’t put a set price on the goods for sale. We like to engage people in conversation and explain to them about Sixty Feet and the children in Uganda. And we’ve been known to sell cups of lemonade for $25!
7. Take lots of pictures and email them to The Cupcake Kids at TheCupcakeKids@SixtyFeet.org. We’ll post them on the website and celebrate together!

Who would have thought that cupcakes could be used to help orphans in Africa? Well, believe it! God is using children and cupcakes here in the United States--and around the world--to raise awareness of and funds for Uganda's imprisoned children. What a great cause with a lasting impact--not to mention a fun project that helps children learn about giving in a tangible way. Thank you, Cupcake Kids! And thank you, Sixty Feet, for allowing the Lord to use you to help imprisoned children in Uganda.

Wednesday in the Word: There's a sermon in that...

If my husband had a nickel for everytime I see something and say, "There's a sermon in that!" he would have enough money to buy himself a field full of greenhouses for gardening until his heart's content...and more. Lucky him, it seems that his recent hobby of choice (you guessed it~gardening) is chalked full of illustrations that remind me of Jesus and His promises~most of them basic and elementary, but after all, aren't we to come to Jesus as little children (Mark 10:15)?

Some of these illustrations don't even need words and a picture does more justice.

This is my most recent "visual" via a baggie of onions in my fridge. My hubs picked them fresh from the garden and they need a gooood wershin'.

Just a few of the many reasons I'm thankful for Jesus (in visualizing the onion as me)...

Train Up Tuesday: A Rainbow of Fun!

Do any of you use Snapfish? I'm FINALLY making some photobooks of pics I've had stored for a couple of years! I've used Walgreens and Shutterfly and have been pleased. I don't think I've used Snapfish, but I'm on their emailing list. They have a neato promo going this summer. You can enter photos based on a color of the week theme for 7 weeks. If you participate, you get a FREE 5x7 photobook! What a fun project! There are more details and more prizes to win!

Wouldn't this be a fun way to make a "color book" for your kiddos or a young friend? It could be a book to introduce colors to your child. Or maybe in talking about colors, you could also use this as an entry to talk about the gospel. (Remember those witness bead bracelets using the cord and 5 different color beads?...think along those lines)

Also, does anyone other than me remember "The Crayon Box Song"? I LOVED this song as a kid!

I love simple things, like rainbow books, bracelets, or songs that give me an image to remember basic biblical concepts. What are some favorite songs or crafts that you use around your house to instill and remember the basics?

Summer is a great time to pick up a book and read at leisure while your children nap (if they are still napping age) or after the little ones go to bed at night or you have returned home after a long day at the office and the house is quiet as your family dreams of sugar plums or sprinker time fun.

I recently came upon amazing Christian fiction author Elizabeth Musser and devoured her recent release The Sweetest Thing. This is one of the best books I have EVER READ. This month on amazon you can download a copy of one of her earlier releases called The Swan House.

This beautiful story of a young girl coming of age in the midst of racial turmoil and personal tragedy in 1960s Atlanta convincingly describes how religious faith satisfies the girl's deepest longings. As the novel opens, her artistic and depressed mother has just been killed in an air crash in Paris, leaving a slew of secrets behind. Stay at Home Saturday: Savory Smackerels~Mary Mary, How does your garden taste?

I hope our lil series on No mo suppahtime rut has indeed helped you get outta your recipe ruts. It seems that series could go on for weeks but we are going to switch gears a bit. Perhaps we will one day return to it as the need arises. Now, it's time for a new series!

I am blessed that my hubs has taken up gardening as his hobby. There is definitely a satisfaction to "livin' off the land." Before his gardening days and even now for the produce that isn't "in", the roadside and local produce stands are one of our favorite parts of summer. It allows you to support the local farmers, the produce is fresher than in the store and you can't beat the prices. It's a win win!

So here is the question...if you aren't a canner, you have produce coming out your ears that you don't want to waste and you've shared the bounty...what can you possibly do with all of this summertime produce?!? It's time to be creative, girls. Hence our new series Mary, Mary how does your garden taste? where we are hoping to brainstorm and share some substantial ways to put your garden and local produce stand purchases to some serious use.

Let's start with this fine specimen, shall we?

Perhaps you've heard the quote, "A cucumber should be well sliced, and dressed with pepper and vinegar, and then thrown out." Come on. There HAS to be something more you can do with cucumbers than put vinegar on them, use as a salad topping or make pickles.

Here are my thoughts:

I'm dying to make a yummy cucumber sauce. I'm talking Magianno's style. Do any of you have a surefire recipe you're willing to share?
Musing Foodie kindly shared a homemade buttermilk ranch recipe that you will want to drink. Perhaps we can twist her arm to share it here. We wanted a light dinner last night so I melted some smoked gouda on flatbread, topped with cucumber slices and drizzled it with this dressing. It was so refreshing and a hit with even my meat-loving man.
I know I love a hotel and/or spa or when I enter its lobby or waiting area and there are water pitchers full of ice cold water, cucumber, lemon and/or mint. You could do this at home for a refreshing treat!
Then, we have orzo. Once again, Musing Foodie pulls through with delish orzo which I reviewed here or another orzo I've made and love is here.

Sooo....have you come up with any outta the box ways to serve up those cukes?!?!? Do tell b/c I have mucho begging to try out your tricks and I don't see canning pickles in my near future. Coming next week...peaches!!!

Free For All Friday: Friendship

Proverbs 17:17a "A friend loves at all times..."

They say it takes a friend to be a friend. But once you have them, what do you do? I've also heard the saying that you can count your true friends on one hand. Interesting thought when you stop to ponder it. I promise I'll throw something food related in here to live up to my musing foodie name :) but I wanted to chat about this topic a bit as it's relevant to all of us.

We all have different groups of friends - perhaps a small group or Sunday school class through church, high school or college girlfriends, co-workers, moms you call friends through commonalities - the gym, school or your neighborhood, childhood friends you've known all your life, best friends, A-listers, B-listers...you get the picture.

I want to focus on your core group of friends - the ones you call when you need to vent, cry, yell and have them understand your perspective. The ones you immediately turn to for prayer, council or advice. The ones that you know will not think less of you when you make a mistake, will tell you if there is something in your nose or teeth and can get away with advising you to retire the hideous outfit.

Friendships take work and I've found I get from a friendship what I put into it. If I don't communicate, fail to reach out, don't pray for them, seek out opportunities to show I care or spend time with them, then they don't seem to be at arms reach.

I have made a committment to the friends I hold dear (even though I haven't verbalized it to them) that if I want them in my life, I will put forth effort to keep them there, because they mean something to me and I need them. We're all busy - but that few seconds to send a quick email goes a long way. See something cute as you're perusing a catalogue or internet site? I have a girlfriend who thinks of me everytime she sees something cute and culinary and she will send it my way.

What about the phone? Often neglected in our texting or emailing prone society, a real live phone conversation where you can here emotion behind the words makes you feel like they're sitting right there with you. I love a good phone chat and love quick check ins, questions, thoughts or long conversations. Phone talking time is not a relic of pre-smart phone days gone by.

And for the Emily Post lovers out there, you understand completely the power of a hand written note. I am a firm believer in thank you notes (almost to a crazed fault) and send them whenever the opportunity arises, but I'm also in the habit of purchasing a handful of cards from a bookstore that will fit the bill when a girlfriend needs a boost. Sometimes a friend needs to see those words in print so they can re-read them and save them in their Bible or on a bedside table.

The gift of time is precious and face to face time spent with a friend is like water to my basil plant - it thrives and grows! Sometimes grabbing a friend to just run an errand together helps life seem less hectic. And what about helping them in their laundry list of projects? Packing for a move, picking out a bra (ughhhh!). I've hated that since the 4th grade when Dustin Schlenbaker saw me buying my very first one. I tell you, I'm scarred for life.

And gifts - one of my favorites. Showing a friend you care through a thoughtful gesture of a casserole, cookies/brownies, cupcakes, candy, notepads/trinkets that remind you of them, watching their kids, bringing them a smoothie - there are zillions of ways to say 'hey - love you!' I love to give away baked goods (there's my foodie plug!). It's a great way to show you care.

To have a friend, you definitely have to be one and it does take effort on your part. The rewards reaped from this effort make your cup runneth over. In the past year, I've grown closer to some friends, made some wonderful new ones and nurtured some I've had for years and years. My life is full and rich thanks to the wonderful friends God has placed in my life.

I encourage you to work at your friendships as well - someone out there needs you!

Train Up Tuesday: Summer List 2011

A friend from University posted a fabulous idea on Facebook regarding a Summer List. Sunday night we had a family meet to discuss our summer wish list. We asked the boys what they would love to do this summer and also some things we could do for others. Our family meeting list is now our Summer List 2011 which is now on the back of our front door.

This is our first year to incorporate a Summer List, however, I ran with the idea based on the fact that lists inspire me. It is a visual for my boys to see the fun that we have in store during summer break. It will serve as a reminder to set aside time for activities that are important to each family member which will become memories treasured in our heart.

Think of activities that can be in the following categories:

1. Spiritual
2. Educational

3. Fun

4. Service

The list can be on a board or just on a sheet of notebook paper. Remember, you don't have to accomplish everything on your list, just do what is achievable and hopefully many items on your list will make a return appearance in 2012.

Tomorrow I will post some ideas to get you going on your own personal list.

Stay at Home Saturday: No mo suppahtime rut Part 6

One of my favorite dishes to try when we go out to eat on vacations (especially the beach) is fish tacos. They just feel vaction-y to me. At home, it seems like everytime I get on Facebook, someone I know is checking into Cabos Fish Taco, a local hot spot, for some seaside flavah. Do you have a favorite go-to place for fish tacos?

Turns out, fish tacos are one of Ashlie's favorite things to make at home when needing to get outta her suppahtime rut. Here are her tried n' true taco tips. If you're not a seafood lover, perhaps you may like to try these tips w/ a lil' poultry?

Growing up we had tacos often, but never did I have a fish taco until a few years ago in San Diego. They were okay, but the best ones I've tasted so far are those made by my amazing sister-in-law.

It's SUPER easy. Choose your fish. I buy frozen tilapia on sale at Aldi's or Bi-Lo. Thaw it, then marinade it. There are lots of way to do a marinade, but I simply buy those McCormick Grill packs. I like the Mojo Lime. YUM!

After marinading for about 15 minutes, bake as you normally would (about 20 minutes).

Next, decide on your toppings. I like fresh cilantro, avocado, lime juice, lettuce, Rotel chilis, a little cheese, and sour cream. Last time we had these, I also made the quesadillas from "Deceptively Delicious". One of the hidden ingredients for that recipe is blending 1/4 cup of light sour cream with 1/2 canned navy beans drained and rinsed. That actually tasted pretty good, so we used that instead of simple sour cream with our tacos. ;-)

A really good and easy side for this is to take a can of fiesta corn

Drain it and marinade it in a favorite dressing (think vinegar based, like Italian). Then, serve over spinach or lettuce leaves.

Can't get much easier or more colorful than that!

Are your car seats safe?!??! Hmmmm. Of course, we'd like to think so but it's nice to have an official seal of approval. Thanks to Britax (maker of our #1 fav car seats), you can set your mind at ease for your summer travels!

I recently discovered that Britax is having monthly checking stations throughout 2011 providing free care seat safety inspection. I believe they did this also in 2010 so I don't know where I've been. Anywho...lucky for us, their North American headquarters is local so local peeps or anyone venturing to Carowinds and in the vicinity of the Charlotte, NC area can make a quick detour right off Carowinds Blvd. to:

Once again, I wouldn't expect it or presume it but never hurts to have a little incentive to make safety #1. :) Let's hear it for Britax being committed to keeping our munchkins safe!

'Oh be careful little eyes what you see…'

It’s funny to me that whenever an idea hits me to write an article for RWAV, it never involves food – and HPS invited me most likely based on my food blog. I don’t think she’ll mind my rabbit trails, since we’ve been getting out of our summertime dinner ruts with the great recipes and ideas she’s been sharing.

Summertime brings lots of fun activities for kids – the pool, playgroups, popsicles, camp, family vacations, VBS and movies…to name a few. Some of the national movie theater chains are offering free or $1 kids movies throughout the summer and this was marked on our calendar as a must do. This week was the launch and I excitedly pulled up the list of movies being shown. All were rated either G or PG – perfect for kids, right? Well, not quite.

I knew the content of a handful of the movies being shown and the rest were a bit foreign to me…so I did a little research. Focus on the Family has a movie review section on their website where you can pull up a review on just about any movie you can think of. www.Pluggedinonline.com gives you the synopsis of the story line, the positive elements, spiritual content, sexual content, violent content, if there is any crude or profane language, drug and alcohol use/abuse, negative elements and their overall conclusion.

I found this to be a wealth of knowledge and crossed out a few movies from the kid’s series that my 4 year old impressionable son will not be seeing. As his parent, it’s my job to help mold and shape him into a Godly young man. There were themes, words, inuendos and storylines that just weren’t appropriate for his little eyes to see and ears to hear, even though they had the ‘safe’ rating. Knowing I can’t keep him in a bubble and that at some point he will face the raw truth of this world, I want to take his formative years where he is most impressionable and fill them with the tools he will need to ward off temptations and pitfalls as he gets older.

I won’t list the ones I erased from our list, as it’s up to each family to decide for themselves, and some subject matter is more age appropriate for older children. I do want to recommend you visit the website if you have a chance – it’s a real eye opener. This site might be helpful when deciding on a movie for your next date night too. :)

Train Up Tuesday: Celebrate the Flag!

Has today just passed you by? I mean, did you wake up thinking..."just another Tuesday"? Did you know it is "Flag Day"? Does it matter? I have a love/hate relationship with the spring/summer holidays from Memorial Day through Veterans Day (with D-Day, Flag Day, 4th of July) all of it wrapped up in these nice, beautiful seasons. On the one hand, you have a great 5 months to celebrate the greatness of patriotism. On the other, you have a lot of people (including myself) who see it all get jumbled up into "one" idea of celebration. Each of these holidays mark very specific points for our country - honoring the fallen brave servicemen and women, remembering specific attacks, the "adoption" of our flag, our country's "birthday" of freedom, honoring those who have served. It is a beautiful time indeed, but it is so easy to gloss over all of it and not take time to make each of these days special.

In the past, I've not really made a big deal over "flag" day. I'd like to change that. Last year, we visited my Dad's grave on Memorial Day weekend (he was a Marine and actually passed around that time many years ago) and went to our first 4th of July parade . I've not found a lot on "Flag Day" in the way of crafts, but perhaps these links will get you started:

I think this would be a fun flag to make... "Let freedom ring"

Maybe, if your family enjoys exploring "The Flag", you could talk about making your own family flag, filled with symbols that mean something to you, your interests and your values! I'd like to do that at some point with my family. Perhaps revisiting the idea every few years to see if anything changes.

Marvelous Monday: No mo Suppahtime rut~Part 5!

Before we begin today's fun, we need to cover one item of bidness. I've been getting some feedback from peeps trying to comment but having trouble. I had tightened comment securities to eliminate those dirty spam comments but didn't mean to cut out your comments! So...if you are having fits trying to comment, please let us know at our Facebook group (since I'm assuming you wouldn't be able to comment on this) and let me know what it does when you try to comment or give me any info. that might help me resolve this issue. I would greatly appreciate it because we would LOVE your comments!

Some days, quick, go-to, easy, tried and true recipes are the ticket to dinnertime sanity. As I mentioned here, it seems many of my fav sisters had the same problemo- a recipe rut. So the recipe sharing began. Thanks to them, you can get outta your suppahtime rut, too, because we're sharing them with you! First, let's review:

Now, for today's fun! In case you haven't heard me mention like a million times, I big fat heart this time saving, cost saving, flavor bursting tip to getting vein free (gag), grizzle free (double gag), white meat chicken breast.

If you didn't believe my the first 30 times I mentioned it, the proof is in the puddin'. So, here's your puddin'.

I recently bought two packs of those split chicken breasts when they went on sale for .99/lb. Each pack had 3 breasts and did not cost over $3 each (normally close to $8 each). Whipped those babies up in the crockpot like the tips says and here is everything I was able to make with STILL some left over.

Chicken Nachos
4- Musing Foodie's Chicken Enchiladas adding black beans and green chiles
24 mini-Nacho Cups for freezer- using leftover Enchilada filling and Trader Joe's whole wheat ready made pizza dough. Babies LOVE these.
Chicken Divan
6-Musing Foodie's Buffalo Chicken Squares- substituting biscuits cuz I was outta crescent rolls).
2-Buffalo Chicken wraps (w/ regular ole whole wheat tortillas using leftover buffalo chicken square filling)
24 mini-Buffalo Chicken "cups" for freezer (same principle as nacho cups using leftover buffalo chicken square filling). Hubs loves these and requested them to pack in his lunch.
...plus I gave the babes some of the chicken straight up for a dinner AND I have a whole tupperware of it in the freezer for a later date.

Convinced yet? That chicken tip really is the ticket to stretching a little bird breast a looooong way. Tell us some recipes you've come up with using this tip so we can be sure to stay out of our suppahtime ruts.

We LOVE Mompreneurs here on the Roof and we love to support them. Today is devoted to an amazing Mompreneur and her cutie patootie creations.

Thrifty Thursday: Summer Reading With Children

It's no secret that coming up with entertainment for the long days of summer can be a challenge to many moms. Caroline has some GREAT tips on how to provide educational, fun entertainment through READING! Thankfully, it can often be acheived at minimal or even no cost thanks to her great program suggestions.

Many schools have already completed the school year and the summer schedule is in progress. At the start of summer it seems like there are many weeks to enjoy one another, however, my experience is that it seems like a blink and then my precious ones are back in school.

My children are still fairly young (6 and 8) and to instill in them the love of reading I provide every possible incentive available. We had great fun last summer doing our Library Summer Reading Program and also participated in Barnes and Noble and Borders. Click here for a list of programs available. They are free to join and you can print the form at home. What a sense of accomplishment to go to the store with a completed sheet of the books read and be able to select a FREE book to add to your own personal library. Also, create awards for reading a set amount of minutes per week and permit your child to select from the award options. Make it fun such as frozen yogurt date out, make your own sundae night at home or even staying up an extra 30 minutes. The key is to make reading fun and provide incentives that will motivate the personality of your individual child.

Our school participates in AR Reading (Accelerated Reader). If you are a homeschooling family or your school does not use AR the website can still be a great resource. Click here to go the website and select parent. You don't have to register or provide any personal information to research books at the desired reading level. I then make a list of what appeals to my children and is in their reading range and via my online library account request the books. I put a post it in the inside cover of each book with the reading level and place in a book basket. This secures my boys are reading books that keep them challenged, however, are also at their personal ability level. I purchased the baskets on sale at my local Hobby Lobby and placed a tag with their name on each one, thus, giving them a sense of ownership. The books stay in the basket when not being read which also aids in getting them returned to the library on time.

Train Up Tuesday: An "Unholiday"

This week, if you're looking for an activity, consider going through your holiday idea list. You may know I love to do Advent countdown for Christmas, but I declare, even with a list and a schedule, you just don't always get to everything (and that's a GOOD thing...we all need a little flexibility). Maybe you have a craft, a recipe, or activity you didn't get to during a holiday (Christmas, Easter, Valentine's, anything). Who says you have to wait until the next time it comes around? I promise that your kids won't really care.

We did just that recently. I had purchased a Snoopy "holiday" cookie kit at Hobby Lobby on 50% off (don't sweat it, the ingredients in the box were still okay ;-). So, the boys and I did a little "unholiday" baking!

Marvelous Monday: Deals for Dad

Hey gals! Father's day is less than 2 weeks away. Have you already found something for your guy (or Dad, Step-dad, Grandfather, etc.)?

I think men can be tough to buy for in general. My husband groans when he sees so many "suggestions" for gifts for men. More often than not, they are dust catchers and silly desk-top knick-knacks that have no real meaning or value.

One thing that I have seen make the men in my life light up are things made with photos of my boys or our family. We did calendars with photos on each month for a couple Christmases and the year we didn't do one, my father-in-law did not do a good job concealing his disappointment. I often wrack my brain trying to come up with something. Most of the men in my life don't wear ties or other accessories. They don't have hobbies for which I can buy. What to do, what to do?!

Stay at Home Saturday: Savory Smackerel~No mo suppah rut Part 4

We took a little break last week for some Memorial Day inspiration, but today, we're going to resume our regularly scheduled Get outta your suppahtime rut Series. First, let's not forget the quick, easy, go-to recipes already shared from women just like you.

Today, my girl, Katie L., has TWO quick, easy, go tos that happen to also be a couple of our favs~especially if we don't have a plan and the "5 o'clock pantry stare" bites. Katie says:

1.Black Beans and Rice is cheap and sooo good. It's a staple for us. Ground beef, yellow rice, onions, green peppers, black beans, sour cream, etc. You can really but whatever you like on there. Even some fresh guacamole is good.

I'm gonna interject and say this is also FABULOUS with a little salsa thrown in there, this chicken and mozarella cheese!

2. My other suggestion is make your own baked potatoes. Put a bunch of toppings out and let your family pick what they want on there's. Chicken, beef, cheese, veggies, etc.

Just me interjecting again-pop those babies in the microwave and they take no time. These are also fabulous with that same chicken, salsa, guacamole, deli ham, mushrooms sauteed in olive oil and cooking wine. She's right--the list is endless!

See!!!! Cooking dinner doesn't have to be intimidating or laborious with a million steps that require a million dishes to clean in order to be yum. Sometimes some of the best meals are the simple ones. Thanks for the idea(s), Katie.

Awhile ago, my friend, Katie, referred me to a new consignment store in our area. I've had some bad consignment store experiences--mostly due to lack of organization--so I ventured to this new store called Kid 2 Kid with somewhat low expectations. Much to my surprise, it exceeded my expectations and I instantly fell in love.

The store was clean, organized, not crowded, pleasing to the eye...It didn't leave me with the feeling that I needed to plow through dust and moth ball odor to find a glimmer of a treasure. In fact, at just a glance, I spotted many boutique and trunk show items in excellent condition at a fraction of the cost. Right up my alley! Not to mention, the toy, book, gift (many brand new Melissa and Doug items) and BOW selection (beautiful, brand new bows of all sizes at very reasonable prices. Oh, how I love those bows!).

Kid to Kid (K2K) is a nationwide chain and we are blessed to have TWO in our hometown. I highly recommend you check their website to find the closest one to you. They have some great programs from which you can benefit.

Income- If you consign at K2K, you have the option to receive cash or an additional 20% if you choose to receive store credit.
Frequent Shopper's Discount- Be sure to ask for a punch card and they will stamp your card for every $10 you spend. After you fill the card, you will receive 20% off your entire purchase on your next visit.
Discount per transaction- If you sign up for their email list, K2K will email you any sales and specials plus a monthly password so that you can receive $5 off a $25 or more purchase. This usually ends up scoring me a free bow! :)
Reading program-This last program has been a hidden gem and you don't want to miss it if you have a K2K in your area. Praise the Lord for my friend, Tara, that spilled the beans, or boy, would we have been missing out. Turns out, K2K will give you a Book Club card per child (they even gave me one for my one year old twins) and your child (or you) can pick one book-per card-per month- FREE up to $1.99. If you select a book over $1.99, you simply pay the difference. It makes for a great summer outing and we ended up getting three precious books today for a mere $3.00 out of pocket. Thrifty Thursday: Best Organizational Solution EVER

Do you have overcrowded bookshelves? Do you cringe when you walk by your child's bookshelf and see it crammed with books that aren't perfectly lined according to size and width but know as soon as you organize it to your liking it will end up looking just like that again?

If you answered yes to either of those questions--oh my word!!!!!--do I have THE solution for you. This solution is so brilliant that it pretty much requires all of you to do it in your house immediately. I mean, you even may want it in like every room.

I was at my girl Anna's home for Memorial Day and walked into her playroom to witness this eye candy--a tidy semblance of books! Now, these shelves were not in her playroom the last time I was at her house, so, of course, I had to inquire. I assumed the answer would include words such as "Pottery Barn, Land of Nod, custom made, etc." Boy, was I wrong and had to pick up my jaw off the floor when the two word answer that my ears heard was, "rain gutters." Yep, you heard right--RAIN GUTTERS.

Maybe I live under a rock and this idea is old news but I find it revolutionary. Anna told me to google "rain gutter bookshelves" for a tutorial and to see the other layouts that people have implemented. I encourage you to do the same for your own personal inspiration. You will find an excellent tutorial here. This particular blog also explains that the rain gutter bookshelves "encourage children to read more because they can see the fronts of the books and are intrigued, rather than just seeing the edge of the book and not being able to tell what it is about. " Not to mention, it makes it waaaaay easier for the children to put away their books!

Already have a tidy book system? Don't put this brilliance in a box just yet! Perhaps you need a solution for your craft area/room...

Are you wondering about the savings? A 2 foot version of a similar ledge from Pottery Barn would cost you $24.00 and the 3 foot would be $34.00 OR the children's version at Pottery Barn kids ranges from $39.00 to $59.00. At Home Depot, a whole 10 feet of white gutter is a mere $5.23 without any coupon or discounts. You may even be able to find some great gutters at your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore. No more justifiction needed. Get busy and be sure to share how you implement this concotion. I know I'll never look at rain gutters the same.

Just Pray!

We've devoted the past few Wednesdays to the topic of prayer. There are more golden nuggets on the Roof about prayer but today we need to stop and just pray.

My Daddy ended up heading to Joplin, MO over Memorial Day to visit with the recent tornado victims and those ministering to them. The pictures and stories that bring it "home" are spine tingling. It underlines just how much these people need our support-most importantly through prayer. Many of them have lost everything including spouses, children, grandchildren, the list goes on. They have a long road ahead of them. Will you pray for this town and it's people today?

On a personal note and as the article below mentions, this devastation does magnify the importance of building our lives, our home on the Rock so that our own houses can stand!

The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. ~Matthew 7:25

A Memorial Day to Remember

When Will Graham looked out over Joplin, Missouri, this morning, he saw mile after mile of devastation. The May 22 twister left a swath one mile wide and seven miles long. “The community is literally ripped apart,” he said, trying to put words to the horrific scene he witnessed. “Nothing is left. The streets are wiped clean.”

Joining his father, Franklin, on a Memorial Day visit to the tornado-ravaged community, Will met with Rapid Response Team chaplains and Samaritan’s Purse volunteers working on a holiday to show the love of Christ to storm victims, and with survivors who shared stories of tragedy and triumph.

“We met one 83-year-old lady who survived the tornado by hiding in a little closet with her pet and a picture of Jesus,” said Will. “She was literally trapped in there until her son chain-sawed through the sheet metal to dig her out. But she was smiling and talking about her love for Jesus today.”

Will and Franklin also met a young man who said he had his values “upside down” before the storm. He survived the tornado by diving from his shower into a crawl space under his house. He realizes God spared his life. “After his world was turned upside down,” said Will, “this man’s values are now right side up.”

Both Grahams stressed the importance of prayer. “We come in the name of Jesus Christ and the greatest thing we can do is pray,” said Franklin. “This community has been hit hard. This tornado will go down in the record books. We are focusing on helping people who have lost absolutely everything."

“Pray for the Rapid Response Team chaplains and the Samaritan’s Purse volunteers who are ministering here,” said Will. “Also pray for the churches in this area. Here in the Midwest—in this beautiful, hard-working community—neighbors are helping neighbors. Christians are being the body. People from around the country have come here to help.”

Some 830 people showed up to volunteer on their day off work. “I want to thank the volunteers for all that they are doing,” Franklin said. “We couldn't do what we do without volunteers.”

Overwhelming Magnitude
Preston Parrish, Executive Vice President of Ministry for BGEA, and Ken Isaacs, Vice President of Programs for Samaritan’s Purse, accompanied the Grahams on their visit today. An eyewitness to many disasters himself, Parrish found the scene in Joplin overwhelming: “This tornado has shaken both the community and the people volunteering in Joplin.

“Even the seasoned chaplains are saying this storm has affected them in a way that others haven’t,” Parrish said. “The magnitude of this tornado—you have to see it to even begin to understand it. There has been tremendous loss of life—everybody pretty much knows somebody who has either died, or been injured, or is still missing. You walk through these neighborhoods and smell death.”

Parrish said the tornado gutted several community landmarks, including the high school and hospital. Walmart and Home Depot are demolished.

“An everyday community in middle America has been forever changed,” he added. “People are in shock. Many people are grieving. I talked to a 10-year-old girl and asked if she was afraid as she looked to the future.”

The girl admitted that she was a little afraid, “but I know God is with us.”

People are looking at a future that not only includes rebuilding physically, said Parrish, “but toward a future of having to live, for the rest of their lives, with having been through an experience that has underscored for them that, in an instant, everything they know can change.”

Why We are Here
That, of course, is why we are here, Parrish added. “To help them experience the fact that God is with them, that He has not forsaken them, that He loves them, that while we cannot control the storms that come to us in life many times, we can choose to face them standing on the solid rock, the firm foundation of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

And that is the message that RRT chaplains are communicating. “We are praying with people who are realizing that for the first time now, through the wake-up call of this storm, they need to receive Christ,” said Parrish.

Perhaps no more powerful depiction illustrates the current mood in Joplin than the sign for the local high school. The “J” and “lin” were blown off in the tornado, leaving only “op.”

Somebody took paint and painted “h” before the “op” and “e” after it: “Hope.”

“That is a great picture of the message that can come from this crisis,” Parrish added. “While it’s an awful thing, the thing to learn out of this, is that through faith in Christ, the winds blow, the storms come, the rain falls.

”But if we are founded on the Rock, our lives, our house can stand.”

Train Up Tuesday: Summer Kick-Off!

Hey gals!

Well, although it isn't "officially" summer, I'm sure most of you have children who are out for the summer (or at least will be within the next 2 weeks?). Even though summertime holds some of my favorite moments, I know that it can be easy to fall into a summertime "rut" this day and age. (Is it just me or does it seem like kids have more "to do" and play with than ever, yet STILL manage to get "bored"?)

Hopefully, we'll be able to provide some ideas as well as specific activities to help bring a smile each week :)

This week, think about enjoying what's out your window (an idea I swiped from "Large Family Logistics"). Seriously, take a moment with your child(ren) and look out a window (i.e. his bedroom window, a living room window, or wherever you most often look out). Ask your child what they see, what they like seeing, and then how they think they could make it more beautiful. Maybe they like the flowers in a neighbors yard. Perhaps you could plant some annuals around the tree he sees through his favorite window. Maybe she has a favorite tree she likes to sit under. Perhaps you could work on building a swing for the tree.

At our home, we've really enjoyed watching the birds fly into our yard and peck at the birdseed cakes. My boys and I had a great time recently, making a wonderful gift for our fine feathered friends. We combined a couple of really great ideas: The Perfect Pinecone and a Bird Nest Helper. Honestly, it's not that I'm THAT creative...I'm just a resourceful idea thief (and shameless at that). We had received a bird feeder kit as a birthday gift that contained the peanut butter, the seeds, and instead of a pinecone, a grapevine ball. So, with thanks to all the idea givers ;-), here we go:

First you need scraps of fabric, string, and such...

Cram the grapevine ball with your helpful nesting scraps

Next, get your jar of peanut butter (we were lucky to have received the really good Whipped stuff)...

He ESPECIALLY thought it was the good stuff ;-)

Fortunately, most of the peanut butter made it onto the ball!

Next, you'll need some birdseed

Now, enjoy sprinkling the ball, rolling it around in the birdseed

Finally you can hang it on a favorite tree and enjoy the "visitors"

Honestly, we are still waiting to see our feathery friends. I find that it usually takes them a couple of weeks to warm up to the notion of whatever birdseed we put out. Odd?

So, what ideas can you and your kids come up with for changing what you see out the window of your home? Be creative! What about those of you who live in 2nd story apartments or have some other "limitations"? I'd love to hear your ideas!
